Happy Veterans Day! A sincere thank you to all of those who have served. Many do not know that Veterans Day was first commemorated at the end of World War One.... Back then, the US and Hungary were on opposing sides. They were enemies. However, today the two countries share strong bonds of friendship and trust. This year’s election hasn’t been easy, but whatever your political affiliation - now is the time to come together peacefully. We should put aside our differences and remember that we are ALL Americans. Much like the US and Hungary did in the past, we can move towards a common goal of friendship and understanding. Warm regards,

jó reggelt Friends! HAPPY HALLOWEEN! We sincerely hope that you all enjoy this wonderful time of year! As many of you have noticed, we have been posting famous Hungarian vampires throughout the month of October - and today we have our last one, the famous Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó, better known as Bela Lugosi! Lugosi was a Hungarian American actor who is remembered for his early role as Count Dracula in the 1930s.... For those who aren’t so thrilled with the aspect of Halloween, today also is the anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation. On October 31st, 1517 the German monk Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis to the church door in Wittenberg. While Luther was a German monk, his actions reverberated throughout all of Europe. Lastly, for the Catholics among us - All Saints Day is tomorrow, November 1st. It is customary to visit relatives who have passed on, and light candles at their graves. In years past we would go as a group to clean headstones. Unfortunately, due to COVID we will not be able to do so this year... We apologize for the somewhat long post, and we wish you all a wonderful Halloween, and a solemn All Saints Day.

jó reggelt Friends! We’re posting from our Washington state location this morning and it is COLD up here! But the Fall leaves are in full colors and it’s beautiful to see the bright oranges and yellows! With Halloween just one week away, we thought we’d tell you all another Hungarian Vampire story! ... Around the year 1900, there lived a man named Béla Kiss. He was admired all throughout the town he lived in, which was a small village just outside of Budapest. He was tall and handsome, an eligible bachelor. Eventually, he found a wife. They married, and...she went missing. Kiss would post ads over town, they stated that he was a lonely widower looking for companionship. The townspeople would always see him flirting with someone new. In 1914 World War One began, and Kiss was conscripted into the military to fight for Austria-Hungary. A few years passed by, and people thought that Kiss had died in the war. His housekeeper had seen some very large steel barrels. Kiss had always kept them in his back yard. People thought he stored illegal alcohol in them. When the housekeeper noticed that the barrels smelled rotten, she alerted the authorities. Upon opening the barrels, the police found 24 bodies of Kiss’s victims throughout the years - they had all been drained of their blood! World War One was still ongoing, and the Austro-Hungarian military police put out an order to imprison Kiss, who was fighting on the front lines. But they never found him. Legend says that Kiss deserted, and joined the French Foreign Legion - but he was never found there either. Some say he went to Romania or Turkey, or further East. Some say that he fled to New York City, and stalks the streets there til this very day. Be safe out there friends! And enjoy the Fall season!

Szia friends! We hope that everyone is doing well! Today Is the anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, which began on October 23rd. Though the revolt was crushed 13 days after it began, it showed the world the resilience of the Hungarian people. We solemnly would like to remember those brave Hungarians who rose up and fought against the tyranny of the Communist Soviet regime.

jó reggelt Friends! We hope that everyone’s week is off to a great start! As many of you know, from time to time we like to post a bit of Hungarian history. ... Today, October 20th is the anniversary of when Maria Theresa became the ruler of Austria, Bohemia, and Hungary in the year 1740. While she herself was a Hapsburg from Vienna, she admired the strength and bravery of her Hungarian subjects and was thus respected in turn. What is truly special regarding this woman is that she was a remarkable ruler who proved to the world that a woman can lead just as well as a man!

Szia friends! We hope that everyone is enjoying the Fall Season! Since it is October, we thought we’d post a spooky bit of Hungarian history! ... Erszebet (Elizabeth) Bathory, known as the Blood Countess was a Hungarian noble woman from the 1500s. Legends say that she was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of teenage girls. She had her servants roam the countryside, collecting girls to bring back to her castle. She would then torture them and bathe in their blood - hoping that this would make her live forever. If you are a young woman, beware - for they say that her spirit still searches for beautiful young women! Countess Bathory is a popular legend in Central Europe, and its interesting to note that many modern ideas of Halloween such as vampires and werewolves have origins in the homeland. Stay spooky friends!
