September 11, 2001. American Airlines flight 77 is hijacked by terrorists and hits the Pentagon, causing 184 fatalities. Specific to the Department of the Navy ...(DON), the fatalities are: 33 military personnel, six civilians, and three contractors. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 hit the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center, New York City. #OTD in 1988 - USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) is commissioned in New York City. The cruiser is the third ship named after naval battle in a New York lake where Commodore Thomas McDonough defeated a larger and more heavily armed British squadron Sept. 11, 1814.
