What your kids need to know in an emergency ...

Newport Beach Police Department 13.07.2021

Do you know how our Animal Control Officers can tell that spring has officially arrived? When they get called to perform their first duckling-in-storm-drain rescue of the year! In the spring, most of our local wildlife are raising newborns. In the most cases, the parents are best left to raise their babies with no interference from us. But every once in a while they need a hand, like when this duckling mistimed his jump up a steep curb and ended up in the storm drain. Luckily... for this little mallard, ACOs Nick Ott and John Nelson were able to get him out. Using duck call sounds on their phones, they lured him out of a tiny pipe and into the catch basin, where the ACOs were able to reach him. Because his family left the area before he was rescued, he was taken to the Wetlands & Wildlife Care Center , where he seems to be settling in just fine with his new brothers and sisters! See more

In preparation for the joint enforcement operation that took place on Sunday, the Newport Beach Police Department Traffic Division developed and hosted California POST-approved training for allied law enforcement agencies that will participate. The course involves both classroom and hands-on, in-field vehicle inspections under the instruction of referees from the California Bureau of Automotive Repair. This training ensures police officers can more readily identify loud/modified vehicle exhaust and other illegal modifications to vehicles to increase their effectiveness in enforcement efforts.

"We serve because the Mounted Unit provides a great service to the community. There is a lot of positive feedback from the community regarding the presence of horses at Fashion Island and the Boardwalk. We also serve to give back to the police department who serves our community." - Mounted Volunteers (Photo taken in 2019.)

Need some inspiration for your holiday shopping list? We got you! Here are just a few ideas of things you can get your loved ones to protect their property & give them a little peace of mind: Doorbell Camera: Great for deterring package thieves or home burglars trying to case a house.... Motion Activated Security Cameras: Get the kind that send an immediate notification to a smartphone that way you can call the police right away if you observe anything suspicious. You can get these for indoors and/or outdoors. Smart Home Lighting: There are lots of lighting options (switches, plugs, light bulbs) that allow you to turn your inside lights on & off, either from your smartphone or by using a timer. Burglars are looking for empty houses to target, so when you’re away, use your interior lights to create the appearance that someone is inside. TV Simulators: Another great home burglar deterrent - these devices make it look as though someone is inside watching television! High quality bike lock (great for any & all cyclists in your life): Certain types of locks are easily defeated, so get your loved one a lock specifically designed for bicycles. Your local bike shop will have some good recommendations & can demonstrate how to use the lock properly. See more

We’re blessed with a lot of positive feedback from our community members, but sometimes a call will still catch us by surprise. When a teenager was suspect in a shoplifting case, his father called the department not to lodge a complaint, or to try to get his son off the hook but to compliment the officer. The father praised Officer Garrett Gergins, and his smart and rational approach to the situation. He also wanted the supervisor to know that Garrett represented the Department exceptionally well throughout their interactions.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the California Highway Patrol today for their loss of Officer Andy Ornelas. On November 23, 2020, at approximately 7:05 pm, Officer Ornelas was riding his departmental motorcycle when a motorist pulled from the right shoulder to make a U-turn directly in his path. Officer Ornelas’ motorcycle struck the other vehicle, causing him to be thrown from his motorcycle. Officer Ornelas was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster. Despit...e significant life-saving efforts by medical personnel, on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Officer Ornelas succumbed to his injuries. Officer Ornelas is survived by his wife, mother, father, brother, and sister. Officer Ornelas was a member of the Department for four years. #officerornelas #21685 #californiahighwaypatrol #chp #eow CHP Antelope Valley See more

FEEL-GOOD FRIDAY Here at the NBPD, we hold ourselves to a pretty high standard. We are always striving to do better to serve our community better, to put together better investigations, and to keep our streets safer. And it’s not just about WHAT we do, it’s about HOW we do it. That’s why phone calls like this one are so appreciated we are grateful for the feedback and we’re happy to hear that we’re on the right track. Two days earlier, this caller had seen a man standin...g in the street. He was blocking a lane of traffic, while creating quite a disturbance and a significant safety hazard. As the caller watched, Officer Nathan Farris responded to the scene and went to work. Nathan got the man calmed down and out of harm’s way, and offered him whatever help he needed. After thinking about this incident for a couple of days, the caller had this to say: I was extremely impressed with how the officer handled the situation. He took care of the situation so efficiently, and at the same time with great respect towards the person in distress.

Throwback Thursday! Yes, our police officers used to wear tan uniforms. Sergeant Charles Olmstead served the Newport Beach Police Department from 1971 to 1994. A very special thank you to his family for sending us these photos from 1985.

After responding to a call at Terrace Park, Officers Furnari and Parrish posed for some photos and gave tours of their patrol cars. Watch out for Officer Jack, his mom told officers that he is on patrol in his police car handing out tickets in his neighborhood. #FuturePoliceOfficer

A friendly reminder from the CA Office of Traffic Safety: Although walking is great in many ways, it can also be dangerous if drivers are not looking out for pedestrians and people walking are not keeping safety in mind.

Newport Beach Police Department 23.08.2020

FEEL-GOOD FRIDAY No one is at their best under stress and traffic collisions are - if nothing else - stressful situations. When Motor Officer John Yim responded to a three-car collision on July 16, tension was high and tempers were flaring. But that soon changed: On July 16, I was involved in a three car accident on Dover and Coast Highway. I was the middle car and there was a young military veteran driving a truck that hit me and caused me to hit the lady in front of me.... The lady very thoughtfully called the police and Officer John Yim arrived on the scene, which was getting a bit overheated between the veteran and the lady yelling ensued. Officer Yim did a tremendous job diffusing the situation, calming the two irate drivers; this was no easy task and he spent 20 minutes helping us with the paperwork. He was diligent in explaining the procedures to each and every one of us. By the time we left the scene, things had basically returned to normal. He is a real credit to the Newport Beach Police Department and they should be extremely proud of his competent demeanor.
