At approximately 2:36 pm, this afternoon, your CHP San Francisco Area responded to a call of a sinkhole in the roadway, on the I-280 n/b, 6th Street off-ramp. Officers Merchant and Andrews located the sinkhole close to the bottom of the elevated off-ramp, within the right wheel path of the #1 lane, and immediately requested assistance from Caltrans, due to the large size of the sinkhole (approximately four foot diameter). Caltrans crews responded to the scene and assisted in... closing down the #1 traffic lane of the off-ramp, for nearly four hours, until the emergency repair of the roadway could be completed, at approximately 6:19 pm. Fortunately no one was injured and no collisions were reported to CHP as a result of this incident. We continue to do what we can to keep traffic flowing smoothly and efficiently, while providing the safety, service, and security you come to expect. Please do your part and maintain a safe following distance, while also being observant of the speed limit and your vehicle’s speed, in order to perceive a roadway hazard ahead and also have enough time to react and avoid the hazard as well. #chp #chpsanfrancisco #roadwayhazard #hazard #sinkhole #I280 #sanfrancisco #caltrans #caltransdistrict4 #emergencyrepair #roadwayopen

Bad Boys, Bad Boys, whatchagonnado....when they come for you? While you were sleeping, early Tuesday morning, your graveyard CHP San Francisco Area Officers Elder and Santiago observed a silver BMW quickly entering US-101 n/b, near Sierra Point in Brisbane, CA. Upon seeing the CHP , the BMW immediately pulled over to the right shoulder. As a good CHiPpie should, they pulled over to check on the BMW. After claiming they thought they had a flat tire (which they didn't )... the BMW left the area swiftly. A quick license plate check returned to a Toyota. Hmmm!! . After catching up to the BMW and attempting an enforcement stop near Cesar Chavez, the BMW began its attempt to unlawfully elude CHP units at speeds up to 135 mph across the SF/Oakland Bay Bridge. Upon entering Oakland, CA, the BMW exited on the I-580 e/b, MacArthur Blvd. off-ramp, where it continued to drive too fast on the elevated ramp and collided through a concrete wall at an intersection. The BMW fell nose first approximately 20 feet down and impacted the roadway below, on W. MacArthur Blvd. The three occupants, ranging in age from 18 to 20 years old, were all apprehended and taken to local hospitals for minor injuries, before being booked into the county jail. Three loaded, semi-automatic pistols were located within the BMW, along with a ski mask and gloves, as well as approximately a half dozen catalytic converters were located in the trunk of the BMW. We are working with our local police department partners along the Peninsula to identify the possible catalytic converter thefts, which may have occurred earlier that night. Fortunatley for these suspects, no one else was injured or killed as a result of their nefarious activities. #chp #chpsanfrancisco #chpchase #100+mph #highspeedchase #uptonogood #sfbayarea #catalyticconverterthefts #semiautohandguns #gotcaught #badboys #nefariousactivities

On Thursday, at approximately 6:53 a.m., CHP dispatch received 911 calls regarding a traffic collision, where a vehicle was reported to have rolled over multiple times, and came to a stop along the right shoulder of US-101 n/b, just north of the SFO Airport on-ramp, in Unincorporated San Mateo County, CA. Your CHP San Francisco Area personnel, along with other responding emergency personnel, including the San Bruno Fire and Central County Fire Departments, arrived at the... collision scene and located the driver, of a silver Toyota Yaris, pinned underneath the vehicle, which had landed back on its wheels after rolling over. Emergency personnel extricated the 23 year old male driver from underneath the vehicle, and initiated life-saving efforts. Unfortunately, they determined the driver had succumbed to his injuries and he was pronounced deceased at 7:10 a.m. Multiple right lanes were closed for up to two and a half hours, during the investigation. Another involved vehicle in the collision sustained only minor damage and the occupants of that vehicle were not injured. Based on the investigation, the Toyota driver made an unsafe turning movement to the right from one of the middle lanes, causing the Toyota to veer towards the right shoulder. Traveling out of control, the front of the Yaris collided with the rear of a Toyota Rav4, which was traveling slightly ahead in the right (#6) lane. The Yaris continued out of control and collided with the concrete jersey wall, which borders the right shoulder. This impact with the wall caused the Yaris to overturn onto its roof and sides. While rolling over, the unrestrained driver was ejected from the passenger compartment of the Yaris and onto the roadway surface, where the Yaris ultimately landed atop him. No other vehicles were involved in this collision, and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this preventable tragedy. Seatbelts saves lives! We can't repeat this fact enough! We are sorry for the loss andto the family of this young man. #chp #chpsanfrancisco #trafficcollision #fatality #buckleup #seatbeltssavelives #preventabletragedy #patrollife @sanbrunofire @centralcounty.fire

Late Sunday night, the driver of this black Audi sedan attempted to re-create his own Space Mountain ride, while traveling on I-80 w/b, to the US-101 n/b Central freeway, in downtown San Francisco. Speed was definitely a factor in this collision, as the front of the Audi collided with the raised concrete curb and metal bridge railing. The Audi drove up over the railing and was fortunately slowed to a stop by the adjacent freeway connector ramp, several feet over. After ex...periencing Mr. Toad's wild ride, the driver apparently exited the and fell approximatlely 60 feet to the city streets below. Amazingly, with multiple injuries, the driver fled the scene and was not located when officers arrived there. The freeway ramp was closed while the vehicle was extricated from its location and while Caltrans responded to and completed emergency repairs to the freeway structure. This collision is still under investigation and we are requesting any witnesses to please contact the CHP San Francisco Area office, as soon as possible. Though we also love the rides at Disneyland too, there is no good reason why anyone should be trying to simulate them on our public roadways. This could have ended alot worse. #chp #chpsanfrancisco #trafficcollision #unsafespeed #slowdown #spacemountain #mrtoadswildride #couldhavebeenworse #patrollife #safetyservicesecurity

Recently one morning, your CHP San Francisco Area received a 911 call from a concerned citizen, regarding a possible injured hawk, on the right shoulder of I-280 n/b, at the Avalon Drive off-ramp, in South San Francisco, CA. Your CHP Officers E. Rodriguez and G. Hodge responded to the scene, where they located the bird and determined it was in need of further medical attention. While waiting for assistance and maintaining social distancing, the officers monitored the bird'...s movements and kept it from aimlessly walking into traffic. The Peninsula Humane Society arrived at the scene and the red-tailed hawk was detained for medical treatment, with a possible injured wing. During this recent incident investigated by CHP San Francisco Area Officer A. San Juan, the rider of this was lucky to walk away from this traffic collision with just minor injuries. The struck the rear of this black Ford crossover, after the Ford slowed to a complete stop for stopped traffic ahead in the s/b lane of SR-1, in the Tom Lantos (Devil's Slide) tunnel. The m/c rider was obviously not focused on the roadway ahead, as there was minimal braking application by ...the before the impact. The m/c was completely destroyed but can be replaced another day. We are thankful that the m/c rider survived this collision, as human life is irreplaceable. We can't stress enough the importance of giving your full undivided attention and focus on the roadway, when driving any vehicle. This past Tuesday afternoon, we were given the opportunity to be invited to make a special delivery to a young 7 year old named Ojas, who continues to persevere while fighting a rare form of leukemia (JMML). Ojas, who also is a twin, had received a bone marrow transplant as a baby, after being diagnosed with leukemia. Unfortunately, over a period of time, the leukemia has recurred in his body and was recently found in his spinal fluid. The day prior @ UCSF hospital, Ojas ...had to go undergo a procedure called an Ommaya reservoir implant in his brain, in order to receive further intrathecal chemotherapy, but that didn't seem to slow him down one bit. Ojas' classmates from his elementary school, along with your CHP San Francisco Area Officer T. Zill and his family, were able to accumulate a large care package for Ojas, which we were able to help deliver to him on Tuesday. Due to the continuing pandemic, we weren't able to go and personally meet with Ojas; however, we were able to meet with Ojas' mother in the hospital lobby and she was able to bring the gifts to Ojas' room. I think by the big smile on Ojas' face, as seen in the picture, he was rather ecstatic and is looking forward to having fun with all those toys. CHiPPER also came out of his Cov-19 hibernation and made a special appearance. We were able to wave up to Ojas, as he was able to get out of bed and look down from his hospital room window, onto the adjacent street. We also were able to talk to Ojas briefly, via a video chat, and we were inspired by his courage and strong will that he continues to display during his fight to get stronger and rid himself of this cancer. Stay alert and stay alive. Driving drowsy or fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving while under the influence. Like alcohol, sleepiness slows reaction time, decreases awareness, impairs judgment and increases your risk of being involved in a traffic collision. On average, In California there are more than 6,000 crashes annually that are attributed to drowsy driving. Some suggested tips to avoid drowsy driving include getting at least 7 hours of sleep a day, sticking... to a sleep schedule, and avoiding alcohol or medications that can cause drowsiness. Caffeinated beverages may help in the short term, but are not a substitute for sleep or rest. Stay alert and drive without distraction not only to protect yourself, but also your passengers and other motorists. If you find yourself too tired to drive: -- Stop driving and pull off the freeway at the next available off-ramp. Find a safe place to sleep for the night (hotel or rest area). -- Take a 15-30 minute nap. Again, exit the freeway/highway and find a well lit area. Make sure your vehicles doors are locked and your windows are up. Do not stop on the freeway shoulders. The freeway shoulders are a dangerous location to be stopped at, and it is also a violation to stop on the freeway shoulders for a non-emergency reason. #chp #chpsanfrancisco #drowsydriving #drowsydriverawareness #sleepydriver #drivingfatigued #completelypreventable #safetyservicesecurity

During the early morning hours, this past Saturday, your CHP San Francisco Area responded to a 911 traffic hazard call, of a Chrysler mini-van, partially blocking the #5 lane, of I-80 e/b, on the Decline portion of the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge. Several CHP units responded and Officers I. Garcia and M. Garcia located the , with the driver (solo occupant) fully asleep at the steering wheel. The engine was still running and the vehicle’s doors were locked. A hal...f-full bottle of Heineken beer was observed in the center console. Initial attempts to wake the driver resulted in the driver stepping on the gas pedal, causing the engine to rev high. Fortunately, the was in Park and the officers had taken precautionary measures, by blocking any further movements of the vehicle. The driver was eventually awakened and displayed symptoms of impairment when contacted by the officers. He was subsequently arrested after a DUI investigation was completed and spent the remainder of his morning dealing with the repercussions of his improper actions. Often times we locate DUI drivers in this state (asleep at the wheel), while blocking an active lane of traffic, or sometimes parked on the freeway shoulders. If you have consumed or used any substance that impairs your ability to drive, and are contacted by any law enforcement officers in a similar situation, you will more than likely be arrested for DUI. Stopping in a lane of traffic is a danger to any occupants of the stopped vehicle, as well as any approaching traffic. Please make a responsible choice and refrain from driving, if you are impaired by any substance. #chp #chpsanfrancisco #sfobb #dui #dontdrinkanddrive #madd #designateddriver #designateasoberdriver

Not to mention that the weapon’s serial numbers had also been obliterated. Also located in the BMW was a case of cough syrup base which was being transferred into smaller bottles for what appears to be other nefarious criminal activities. CHP EMPHASIZES SAFE THANKSGIVING TRAVEL AMID PANDEMIC SACRAMENTO, Calif. As Californians plan for the Thanksgiving holiday during the ongoing pandemic, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reminds everyone the rules of driving safety are just as crucial as ever. To encourage safe travel, the CHP will enact a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) beginning at 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, and continuing through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 29. During the MEP, CHP officer...s will be actively looking for unsafe driving practices as well as helping motorists in need. This year has presented us with many unforeseen challenges, but safety is still our priority, CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said. If you choose to travel this Thanksgiving weekend, our goal is to help motorists arrive at their destination without incident. Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally one of the busiest travel times of the year. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, traffic may be a bit lighter, but this is not an invitation to speed to your destination. The rules of the road still apply, and motorists should avoid driving tired, impaired, or distracted. Additionally, in an effort to reduce COVID-19 transmission, Governor Gavin Newsom has instituted a limited stay at home order from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and a travel advisory, encouraging people to only go about essential activities during those hours and to self-quarantine for 14 days if they are arriving from another state or country. Those who must be on the road, remember to buckle up. Proper seat belt use is the single most effective way to save a life in the event of a crash. When you are traveling for the holiday, or any time of the year, make sure everyone in the vehicle is safely secured before even starting the car, and that includes children being in the correct child safety seats. During the 2019 Thanksgiving MEP, 42 people died on California roadways. Of the 27 who died within CHP jurisdiction, 11 were not wearing seat belts. The CHP also made 867 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security. #californiahighwaypatrol

Last night just before midnight, your CHP San Francisco Area tag team tandem, consisting of Officers J. Mendoza and J. Escobar responded to a call of a traffic hazard, with a vehicle blocking the #4 lane, of I-80 w/b, near the US-101 transition, in downtown San Francisco. Arriving there promptly, they located a brand new 2021 Chevy Tahoe with the manufacturer dealer stickers still attached to the door windows. The driver, who was still sitting in the driver's seat, advised ...that he had run out of gas. Seeing the vehicle had no license plates (temporary or permanent), as required per Section 5200(a) CVC, they checked the VIN through dispatch and learned that the vehicle had just been reported stolen, approximately two hours earlier, from a Chevy dealership in the East Bay. The vehicle had its keys in the ignition and was stolen while it was being delivered to the dealership, via a vehicle transporter. Being that this driver could not provide a bill of sale or receipt for the $70,000.00+ vehicle, and had no legal ownership to the vehicle, he was immediately taken into custody and booked for the theft and possession of this stolen vehicle. No, you’re kidding me, right?? No, we aren’t kidding around one bit. The driver of this BMW M3 was stopped last week, by CHP San Francisco Officer Marvier, after he locked in the BMW’s speed at 144 MPH, in a posted 65 MPH speed limit zone, on I-280 northbound, near Larkspur Drive. Of all the speeds that were observed and documented, this was the highest speed cited this month. As a reminder, exceeding 100 MPH will get you an automatic in-person court appearance, a high ...$$$$ fine, two points on your driving record, as well as a 30 day driver license suspension. I’m guessing this need for speed won’t be worth it after his court date. This is way too fast on a public roadway! #chp #chpsanfrancisco #needforspeed #slowdown #speedlimit #toofast #driverlicensesuspension #reckless

We don't need to make this stuff up...it just happens!! This past Saturday night, your CHP San Francisco Area Officers R. Torres, M. Andrews, and J. Blanken were patrolling I-80 w/b, on the SF/Oakland Bay Bridge, when they observed a silver Toyota driving in the #2 lane, at normal bridge speed, with its emergency hazard lights activated on. Officer Torres pulled up along the left side of the Toyota and saw the left front tire was completely disintegrated. Seeing this, Offic...er Andrews initiated an enforcement stop expecting to encounter a possible DUI driver. A stop was made at the Treasure Island off-ramp and the driver of the Toyota was acting unusually suspicious, as Officers Torres and Andrews approached the driver's side together. Come to find out, there was a loaded 9mm handgun, (possibly modified to be full auto), with an extended 30+ round magazine, protruding out of the center console, which Officer Blanken observed during his approach. The driver was removed from the vehicle without incident and a fully loaded 20 round rifle magazine was located in one of the driver's jacket pockets, as well as a loaded smaller 11 round handgun magazine in his rear pants pocket. An AR-15 type rifle with a nearly full capacity p-mag style magazine was attached to the rifle, which was located within the vehicle's trunk. Both the handgun and rifle were "ghost guns" and had no serial #'s. We aren't sure where this person was going or what, if anything may have occurred later that evening had we not made this enforcement stop, but we are glad for three things. This contact ended the way it did without any use of force. The driver was booked for a plethora of illegal violations, and we removed two very dangerous weapons from our streets. #chp #chpsanfrancisco #patrollife #ghostguns #dangerousweapons #safestreets #drivingonarim #selfsurrender #stickoutlikeasorethumb #nefariousactivities #crimedoesntpay #godirectlytojail #makebetterchoices

Seagull playing Crossy Road? Some would say, ohhh, it’s just a seagull! A passing motorist took the time to notice something wasn’t quite right and called it in to our dispatch. It doesn’t matter what kind of animal is out there, big or small. We will still be en route to try and remove the animal, in order to prevent it from creating a distraction or collision, and to ensure the animal receives the medical attention it may need. Fortunately, your CHP San Francisco Ar...ea Officer K. Cahoon was in the area and was able to keep this bird from trying to cross the road. Our friends at the San Francisco Animal Care & Control responded to pick up the injured seagull and provide it with the necessary medical care. Just doing our part!! #chp #chpsanfrancisco #sanfranciscoanimalcareandcontrol #injuredanimal #birdlover #animallove #sanfrancisco #us101 #crossyroad #safetyservicesecurity

Earlier today, Governor Gavin Newsom administered the oath of office to newly appointed California Highway Patrol Commissioner Amanda Ray, a historic move making her the first woman, in its 91 year history, to lead the largest state law enforcement agency in the nation. "I am thankful to Governor Newsom for trusting me to lead this exceptional organization and honored to follow in the footsteps of many innovative leaders who have come before me, including my friend, Warren St...anley," Ray said. "I would not be where I am today without the foresight of those in 1974 who decided to give women the opportunity to become CHP officers, paving the way for many women to assume leadership roles in the Department. I look forward to further guiding the Department and its 11,000 women and men, in engaging with the communities we serve, to ensure California remains a safe place to live, work, and visit. Commissioner Ray began her career with the CHP in 1990, rising through the ranks to her most recent appointment as Deputy Commissioner in February, 2020. All Roads, All Codes!?!? Early Saturday morning, your CHP San Francisco Area Officers G. Cheung and J. Guinn responded to a call for assistance, on US-101 s/b, near 3rd St., regarding a vehicle that had a flat tire, but did not have the tools to replace it with the spare tire. Knowing CHP officers were en route, the driver of the Toyota sedan attempted to hide in the immediate area, some nefarious cargo that he was transporting, hoping the officers wouldn't notice it. Upon... arrival, your dynamic duo spoke with the driver and determined a tow truck was needed to get him on his way. While waiting for dispatch to make the arrangements, Officer Guinn noted some out of place items stashed behind the guardrail, including a styrofoam cooler, a bucket, and fishing nets. Upon opening the cooler, numerous live, small juvenile crabs were observed inside. More small crabs were located inside the bucket, along with one full size crab. Of course, the driver of the Toyota denied any knowledge of the items, but forgot that he didn’t remove all of the remaining fishing gear from the back seat of his vehicle. After being caught red-handed, the Department of Fish and Wildlife was called and a warden responded to the scene. The driver admitted to crabbing near the Fort Mason Area, of the SF Bay, and had illegally captured approximately 138 red rock and dungeness crabs, which were both well over the limit, as well as being completely undersized, slightly larger than a PC computer mouse. Only one crab in the entire catch was of a legal size. The driver was cited by Officer Cheung for his violations and released from the scene after getting his tire replaced. The Fish and Game warden seized the crabs. Though it's not our usual catch (speeder, distracted driver, DUI, etc), we are here to ensure that all California laws are followed and enforced, both day and night. We will take the appropriate enforcement actions when called upon to do so. #chp #chpsanfrancisco #graveyardcaper #patrollife #limits #undersized #knowtherules #followtherules #crabbing #dungenesscrabs #redrockcrabs #sanfrancisco #sfbay #fortmason #californiacodeofregulations #title14 #cadepartmentoffishandwildlife
