Today Officers from the San Diego Area and Border Division teamed up with Casa Familiar, to hand out toys to kids in San Ysidro for Dia de Reyes (3 Kings Day). It was great to see the kids faces light up when they received their gifts. Toys donated were from our CHiPs for Kids toy drives.

The CHP San Diego Area sends its condolences to our brothers and sisters @chulavistapd and the family of Agent Jasen Cunningham who passed away on October 5th after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Agent Cunningham served the Chula Vista Police Department for 15, and served 8 years with the United States Marine Corps. He leaves behind a wife and five children. Rest east hero.

On October 5th, 2020., A San Diego CHP Area officer initiated an enforcement on a blue Hyundai Accent no Interstate 8 eastbound at College Ave, for a violation of section 23123.5 VC holding and operating a wireless phone or communications device. Upon contacting the driver, the officer noticed several indicators of criminal activity. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed the driver was transporting four pounds of different types of marijuana, approximately $2000 cash, and bags to package the marijuana for sale. The driver was cited for violations 11359 H&S possession for sale and 11360 H&S marijuana sale or transportation.

Update from our April 3rd post. CHP investigators were able to identify and arrest the rider of a motorcycle traveling at 181 mph. The rider was linked to numerous street racing, reckless driving, and evaded police on numerous occasions. The CHP wants riders to know we take street racing and reckless driving seriously and we will not hesitate to enforce the law.

Every day, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers respond to vehicle crashes involving children. Finding a child who is unharmed thanks to the proper use of a safety seat can be a bright spot in an otherwise grim situation. We will be conducting child safety seat checkups by appointment only on Tuesday 09/22, Thursday, 09/24, and Saturday 09/26. Call us at (858)293-6000 to schedule your child safety seat checkup. Vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children age 13 and under. The CHP, which works every day to help prevent those deaths, is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote Child Passenger Safety Week, September 20-26.

Starting today at 4:30 p.m, the Convoy Street on-ramp to State Route (SR)52 eastbound will be shut down. Caltrans will be conducting maintenance on the eastbound and westbound lanes of SR-52 between SR-163 and Interstate 805. Both directions will have one lane open. We ask the public to be alert for the work zone, slow down, or use an alternate route. Our officers will be out to enforce construction zone violations. Since 1921, 189 Cal-Trans employees have been struck and killed by motorists in construction zones. @sdcaltrans

Maximum Enforcement Period begins tonight and runs through Monday at 11:59 p.m. During this time, all available officers will be out looking for impaired, distracted and aggressive drivers. Last year, 45 people lost their lives on California roadways during the Labor Day weekend. The CHP arrested over 1000 impaired drivers during the 3 day weekend. Let’s be safe and have great Labor Day weekend.
