On page 14, find the article by Beth Baumert with Amber Heintzberger on "Dressage Puzzlers," this month on half-halts. I highly recommend her discussion of when, why, how to ride half-halts. If you keep in your mind some of her phrases during your subsequent riding, you will better feel/recognize when you and your horse's balance and energy have improved via well ridden ha...lf-halts. As Beth says, "The feeling can definitely vary, depending upon the horse's level of training and innate talent. On the upper-level horse, you get a real sense of self-carriage and that he is carrying you forward after the half-halt. On a younger or greener horse, you get the feeling that he is more in front of you and more buoyant and round, carrying you forward.
