SFUSD’s Board of Education will be voting on the proposal to make Lowell admissions a lottery system for the Class of 2025 this afternoon. Tensions are high after last Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting on the proposal ended in passionate interruptions and name-calling, and public opinion is still divided. Some are worried about their chances of getting into Lowell should the policy be passed. Others are critical of the process used by the Board to propose this new syst...em. Still, others anticipate that this one-year policy will be the catalyst for permanently eliminating selective admissions at Lowell, whether that be positive or negative. A plan to implement a lottery system for Class of 2025 admissions to Lowell High School is currently being discussed by the San Francisco Board of Education, according to an email sent to Lowell parents and teachers this afternoon from Assistant Superintendent Bill Sanderson and Educational Placement Center Executive Director Jeff Kang. In addition, Lowell would not accept any transfer students during the upcoming admissions cycle. This policy is a response to the pandemic a...nd the recommendation is that we do this [admissions system] for one year given current conditions, Sanderson and Kang wrote in the official email announcement. The Board of Education plans to discuss this policy at a meeting on Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. At this meeting, there will be an allotted time for the public to voice their opinion on the new policy. https://thelowell.org//board-of-education-announces-poten/ See more
