"All I Need Is Just Enough" Stewardship Devotion by Steve Berry This week we were retold the story from the 16th chapter of Exodus. God had provided His people quail, manna and water for sustenance. Just enough manna for each day and on the sixth day, just enough for two days.... As I reflect on this notion of "enough" the words "have", "need", and "want" come to mind. Do I have what I want? Do I have what I need? Do I need what I want? Do I even want what I need? We see and hear commercials everyday appealing more to the wants, but making them sound like needs. Often times we hear it said that God might not give us what we want, but provides us with what we need. You older rockers may be recalling some Rolling Stones' lyrics about now. Once upon a time, shortly after I was confirmed, I was talking to my mom asking if there was a significance to how often we had communion in church. Our church, back then, practiced communion on the first Sunday of the month. I understood the Eucharistic meal then much the same as I do today. I am in communion with Jesus as he shares his body, his blood, and his community. Today, the names and faces of that community have changed to your names and faces. Does God give me what I need? You bet He does! Does He know what I want? Apparently. So I asked, "why don't we practice communion every Sunday?" My mom lead me to the (once-upon-a-time) post-communion blessing in our service book. It was something like "... may the Lord strengthen you and preserve you until life everlasting". Now days you may recall, in our post-communion, we instead sing a response with a version of the Song of Simeon. The Holy Spirit had promised Simeon that he would remain alive until he saw the Messiah. Every time I get to take communion it's enough for the rest of my life! Just enough! Just what I need. But just what I want is to share the meal with the community God has given me. I trust God knows that's what I need. It might be during a streamed service these days, but I know my community is there - I can feel it - and for now, it's enough.
