You might first see a camping tent. I on the other hand see and emergency family shelter for evacuation of family and comfort after a major disaster. Granted you may not need one this big, but any shelter after a disaster will be welcomed. Even at an established shelter, a tent can at least provide some privacy from the masses. In this case, remember, bigger isn’t always better. Close quarters help share heat and give a family a security bonding that helps with the stress of the event. Be Prepared!

Superstorm Sandy Gas A fireman joins a gas line to get fuel for firehouse generators on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 on Manhattan's lower east side, New York. People in New York and New Jersey are still facing multiple problems in the effort to recover from Superstorm Sandy. (AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews) AP Really Firefighters waiting in line for fuel for emergency equipment??? Where the heck was the planning in this mess. Sandy is displaying the shortcomings of those you trust to protect you in a disaster. Even the FDNY wasn’t spared, what makes you sure your any better protected???? Be Prepared!

As time passes for those suffering through Sandy I watch in horror as our government (FEMA) and those of the local jurisdictions drag out the recovery effort. Their suffer is a strong indication of how independent the average citizen needs to be prepared ion the event of a disaster. As for the gas shortage That entire situation could be solved in 24 hours by assigning military and National Guard fuel tenders at gas station throughout the city ands affected areas. It’s a shame to continue to see them suffering when solutions are available. Be Prepared!

Your To Go bag needs to contain supplies for your survival in the event you needed to flee your home or office in a disaster. Containing food, water, lighting and other survival basics to sustain and ease the first 72 hours of the onset of a disaster, your To Go Bag is a necessity. Be Prepared!

FEMA has a plan to get your debris away after you have removed them from your house and stacked them neatly on the curb. Of course it always looks as nice and neat as this FEMA document (available on the internet of course, which victims always have after a disaster.) Be Prepared!

Explain how a major city like New York has firefighters in safety clothing standing in fuel lines to run emergency equipment... Planning and preparation is what MANAGEMENT is paid to do! Who failed? And who is going to be fired? If you still feel the government will protect and provide, watch the news and learn of their latest failure!

Most don’t even give it a passing thought, but how do you do laundry when the power and water are out. You do as our famous Marries do, you adapt, improvise and overcome. Buckets, (you seen those mentioned before) and a washing plunger to agitate the load will getter gone! Rise in a different bucket of clean water and hang out to dry (still popular in a lot of Southern states.) Like those on the North East Coast who suffered great loss are learning to rethink daily choirs and just how to get them done. Be Prepared!

As mentioned before, the five-gallon bucket can hold emergency supplies for a single person for three days (that pesky 72 hours that everyone recommends.) Premade kits can be purchased, but it can be a family weekend project to build your own 72 hour bucket. Can you really say Family Time better then working to be prepared for the next disaster your family might face? Be Prepared!

Spare fuel, you do keep some handy for emergencies, right? You don’t need a large fuel can, but 2.5 gallons can top of the car and get you away if your low on gas, or fuel that generator that’s been running and keeping the lights on and the beer cold in the refrigerator. Even spare empty fuel cans come in handy. I bet you would have a hard time finding a spare fuel can right now on Long Island? Be it earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornados, disasters strike every place. Don’t be fooled. Be Prepared!

The Emergency Blanket, which really isn’t much of a blanket other than you can wrap yourself up in one and reflect your own body heat back upon yourself to remain warm in a cold disaster situation. Used by the military to protect servicemen from shock and hypothermia in the field. Developed during our space race days, this lightweight, compact wrap can make the difference between life or death in a survival situation. You should have one for at least every member of the family in your survival kit. Available at most sporting good store and have an extended shelf life, they are worth every penny spent. Be Prepared!

A five-gallon bucket, like the ones paint comes in for larger projects are a perfect disaster tool. Inexpensive, and with a lid, water and critter tight, they make great storage for survival rations, tools and water and have a built in carrying handle. A five-gallon bucket can hold enough food and water for one person for up to three days, and in a pitch can be converted to a toilet if necessary. Be Prepared!
