Why is recycling important? Why recycle at all? Recycling converts the things we throw away into new items, making sure that none of the energy and raw materials used to make them goes to waste. It also prevents air and ground pollution, and the release of greenhouse gases that results from dumping was waste on landfill sites. But recycling does much more than this. You might think that putting your plastic bottles and aluminium cans in the recycling bins doesn’t make that mu...ch of a difference, it really does. The bottom line is that it saves energy and we can all use some more energy these days. Here at Southern Monterey County Rural Coalition, we like to keep the community informed about excellent ways to establish a recycling program and keep recycling into the future. The Waste Management of Monterey County has a informative link on their website called Recycling 101 that has some great tips. Please see the link attached here: https://www.wm.com/us/en/recycle-right/recycling-101 We hope you find some of this information helpful for going green and staying green. We received this update from Robert Rivas regarding the 2021 Year Session and Budget Update: This month marks the start of a new year and a new legislative session here in Sacramento, and the Assembly is ready to hit the ground running as we begin to tackle the many issues facing our state. As the new session begins, my staff and I have been crafting a bill package that addresses our community's urgent needs.... I recently introduced Assembly Bill 73, the Farmworker Wildfire Smoke Protections Act. Coming on the heels of the worst wildfire season in California's history, this legislation will ensure that farm and other agricultural workers will be protected against the severe health impacts of wildfire smoke, including by creating a dedicated stockpile of N95 masks. I will be sharing our entire legislative package with you soon, so please stay tuned. As always, I encourage you to reach out to my office at 831-759-8676 with any ideas, questions, or concerns. Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom released his initial state budget proposal for 2021-22. I want to give you an overview of what is in the budget, so you know how California is prioritizing funding for key programs and issues that may impact you. The Governor's budget makes smart investments in agriculture, education, infrastructure, homelessness, and housing. Most critically, the budget includes bold steps to address the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure a strong economic recovery. On issues important to our district, the budget proposal includes funding for: Sustainable agriculture Direct technical assistance to small and mid-sized farms Telehealth Golden State Stimulus Checks - economic recovery aid for low-income Californians, regardless of immigration status Investing in health equity resources and health outreach to Spanish-speaking communities A renewal of the Golden State Teacher Grant championed by my office While this is only the first step in creating the budget, the Governor's proposal is a promising blueprint for our economic recovery. I look forward to working with the Administration and my legislative colleagues to solidify the best budget for every Californian. Stay safe and stay healthy. Sincerely, Robert Rivas Assemblymember, 30th District https://a30.asmdc.org//20210114-assemblymember-robert-riva

Southern Monterey County has an opportunity to have our voices heard! Robert Rivas wants to know...What Issues Matter to You? Please see the link to the survey below:... Dear Neighbor: I am proud of how we've come together as a community in 2020 to tackle an unprecedented set of challenges, including COVID-19, wildfires, and a challenging economy. From across our district, we've sheltered-in-place, supported our local businesses, and looked out for each other. Rest assured that the California State Legislature is working hard to confront these challenges, including passing a balanced budget and numerous bills, including: Measures to ensure agricultural workplace safety (AB 2043) $1 billion in emergency COVID-19 relief Important measures relating to workers' compensation, family leave, and tenant protections Tax credits for small businesses Preservation of funding for K-12 schools However, the work of the Legislature is far from done, and your input is very important to guide this process. Please take a few short minutes to complete this survey about issues that matter to you. Rank the issues in order of importance, with 1 being the most important, and 5 being the least important. Within each issue block, there are three sub-issues; rank those sub-issues in similar fashion. Take the Survey / Tome La Encuesta Button https://a30.asmdc.org/30th-assembly-district-issues-survey- If you like posts like this or want to know what is happening in Southern Monterey County, please LIKE us on our Facebook page.

The goats are here! The BLM Central Coast Field Office at Fort Ord National Monument (FONM)!! #MontereyCounty will be hosting bands of goats from Goats R Us for the next six months. This week they brought the first band of 600 goats to the Monument, with another 1,400 to join them soon. They are knocking down dry weeds, brush, and grass to reduce fire hazards and will continue their work until next summer! Currently the goats are working adjacent to residential neighborhoods along State Route 68 on the Monument. This will be the fourth year that goats have grazed at FONM under a partnership arrangement to reduce fuel loadings in this urban setting. Last year, 2000 goats were used to help reduce fire hazards on 2,700 acres of wildland urban interface. [Bureau of Land Management CA]

October is Earthquake Preparedness month! Here at Southern Monterey County Rural Coalition want to keep our community safe. How can you be prepared when the big one happens? After an earthquake, mobilizing search and rescue efforts and adequately preparing shelters with supplies of food, water and hygiene products takes time and personnel. Both of which might be short during a major disaster. Until help can arrive, self-sufficiency is key to your comfort and survival i...n the days immediately following the event and self-sufficiency will only result from advanced preparation. Preparing for a major earthquake begins by building or purchasing Earthquake Emergency Kits. Your earthquake survival supplies should be stored in locations you most frequent such as your home, vehicle and office. Earthquakes occur without warning thus increasing the probability that you might on the road or at work. Store a Bucket Survival Kit in your home for sheltering-in-place. Keep a Backpack Survival Kit in your car for evacuations/roadside emergencies and stash an individual earthquake kit in your office or classroom. Keep your earthquake preparedness kits in an easily accessible location. In addition, prepare a separate kit for your pets including an emergency supply of food, water and essential items and medications. Here is a link that will help you prepare for a large earthquake: https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/earthquakes/prepared.html If you like posts like these, please "LIKE" us on our FB page.
