NEWSFLASH! Tomorrow, Friday Jan 21, there will be special roundtable discussion on Decolonizing Music Education organized by Christina Zanfagna, associate professor of Music and 20-21 Sinatra Fellow. Christina will be joined by Rhiannon, Francesco Turrisi, and two special guests: Loren Kajikawa, Associate Professor of Music at George Washington University, and Charles Mc Neal, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Community at the San Francisco Opera. This roundtable addresses h...istories of exclusion and white privilege in music education in the U.S. and the world. How can music scholars, educators, professionals, and musicians identify, understand, and evaluate anti-colonial or decolonizing practices even as they are often entrenched in Western models of music making and colonial logics? While focused on how music is taught and learned, the conversation is sure to apply to any discipline. Friday, January 22 12-1:30 pm Register (free and open to the public) for the Decolonizing Music Education roundtable here Join the live webcast here

Another Frank Sinatra Chair in the Performing Arts event tomorrow, January 20th! Rhiannon and Francesco will join students from the Global Music & Cultural Politics SCU Music course to discuss how they conceive of World Music and how they approach crossing music’s borders in their own practice. In addition, Rhiannon, as the new Director of the cross-cultural musical organization and former Sinatra Artists-in-Residence, the Silk Road Ensemble, will talk about the ensemble’s new project focusing on the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1800s.
