Baby alert! Felicia the African lion gave birth to her first cub last Thursday, November 5. This is the first baby for both Felicia and Ralph, and the first lion cub the Zoo has welcomed in 15 years! The first few weeks of a lion cub's life are very fragile, so animal care staff will be keeping a close on things to ensure everything is going well. So far Mom and baby appear to be doing well, but will stay behind the scenes for approximately eight weeks as they continue to bon...d. Stay tuned for more baby updates down the road! . . #babyanimals #babyanimal #zooborns #lions #bigcat #bigcats #amazinganimals #animalsco #adorableanimals #cuteanimal #lioness #babyanimal

#ConservationHighlight: Island Fox! Twelve years ago, these Channel Islands' natives saw a 90% decrease in population numbers. When the pesticide DDT was introduced to the island chain, the local population of bald eagles was decimated, leaving room for Golden eagles- a main predator of the foxes- to move in. At one point only 15 Island foxes remained on Santa Rosa island. But in August 2016, the species was delisted from the endangered species' list due to the conservation efforts of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, and Santa Barbara Zoo!

It is with a heavy heart that the Zoo says goodbye to a feathered friend. Last week, Fabian the Southern ground hornbill passed away from complications under anesthesia. Fabian was a favorite of both Zoo staff and guests because of his friendly nature. Whenever Fabian had a visitor, he would run over to say hello, usually searching around his habitat for a gift to bring. Sometimes a leaf, sometimes a twig, or even a part of his meal! But his true gift was not the presents- it... was that he made everyone's presence feel like a gift. This beautiful bird with the deep blue eyes, perfect eyelashes, and a giant heart that had space for everyone, will be dearly missed. Thank you, Fabian, for finding a friend in everyone and bringing little moments of joy to every day . . #animalsco #animalvideo #animalvideos #adorableanimals #cuteanimal #dailyvideo #dailyvideos #animals_captures #animalsmood #birdlife #birdlover #birdlove See more

Giraffes have excellent vision! Their eyes are some of the biggest of any terrestrial mammal. Not only are they able to see extremely far frontally, their peripheral vision is so wide they can basically see behind them. This helps them to scan the area for threats and predators, such as lions.

The white-handed gibbon is listed as endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Poaching, illegal trading, and habitat destruction are the greatest threats to these animals' survival. Choosing sustainably and locally sourced products will help decrease the need for deforestation of gibbon habitat! Look out for products (like food and cosmetics) that use sustainable palm oil. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's Palm Oil Shopping App is an easy way to help guide your purchasing decisions. . . #savingspecies #wildlifephoto #gibbons #adorableanimal #adorableanimals #cuteanimal #cuteanimals

Although the Snow Leopard has been moved from "endangered" to "vulnerable," the recent estimates of the global population are at around 4,000, which is still on the low end of the scale between endangered (less than 2,500 mature individuals) and vulnerable (less than 10,000 mature individuals). Fortunately, in October 2013, officials representing 12 Central and South Asian countries endorsed a new global conservation initiative to sustain the cats’ mountain-steppe and mountain tundra ranges. You can help now by supporting the Snow Leopard Trust- an organization that strives to protect snow leopards and provide a stable income for people living near these majestic cats. Stop by the Zoo’s Explore Store and check out the handmade merchandise or visit www.snowleopard.org.

The snow leopard species is still at high risk due to habitat loss, diminishing prey, competition with livestock, and poaching. But preservation efforts are paying off. In September 2017, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced that the snow leopard has been downgraded from endangered to vulnerable on the Red List.

According to the Zoo's amazing keeper Ariel, giraffes are sometimes called the "Watchtowers of the Serengeti." As the tallest animals, they have an advantage of being the first to see a looming predator. So other prey animals, such as zebras, will often travel near them in order to be alerted of danger! . . #giraffes #giraffe #animal_captures #wildlifephoto #animalsco #adorableanimals #cuteanimals #amazinganimals
