It's an exciting day at the zoo when you get to see an electrocardiogram on the world's smallest monkey. In providing the best possible care for our animals, specialists are called in for specific procedures including this ECG (aka. EKG) for our pygmy marmoset, "Shorty". This preventative check up is a non-invasive way to see the electrical activity of the heart, and make sure he stays happy and healthy. The Santa Ana Zoo is providing shelter for about 150 animals from the Orange County Zoo in Irvine Regional Park that were evacuated on Oct. 26 because of the Silverado and Blue Ridge wildfires. Animals were evacuated and transported by 25 County staff and assisted by 12 City staff upon arrival at Santa Ana Zoo. The evacuated animals range in size from bears and mountain lions to Madagascar hissing cockroaches and a desert hairy scorpion. The Santa Ana Zoo is using off-exhib...it holding and indoor spaces to provide the animals with safe and comfortable temporary homes until it is safe for them to return to the Orange County Zoo. As in 2017 when the OC Zoo evacuated during the 2017 Santiago fire, the Santa Ana Zoo is proud to be part of a supportive community and to provide aid to its zoo neighbors. #silveradofire #blueridgefire #staysafe #neighborshelpingneighbors @ocparks

On International Gibbon Day we recognize the importance of these amazing primates and pledge to protect them and their habitat. The Santa Ana Zoo's two White-handed or Lar gibbons (Hylobates lar) represent just one of the twenty recognized species of gibbons around the world. Their natural habitat in Southeast Asia is constantly decreasing due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation, making gibbons among the most endangered animals in the world. How can YOU help? Show yo...ur support for gibbons and other animals that share their habitat by supporting local zoos in their care of these endangered animals. Also, choose your Halloween treats carefully! Candy and other products that contain palm oil may contribute to habitat destruction. Check the label for an eco-friendly seal before purchasing. Zoo Staff Tips: Get to the zoo early to hear our gibbons singing! Remember wearing a mask helps protect alpeople and animals! Always check online for lists of eco-friendly candy before going shopping. #internationalgibbonday #hylobateslar #gibbon #conservationeducation #ecohalloween
