Featured Artist: Spar Street This painting, newly acquired by SDHC, is a representation of Thich Nhat Hanh (1926- ), a Zen Buddhist monk a globally recognized and respected religious figure that established Deer Park Monastery, a 400-acre sanctuary in Escondido, San Diego, California. In addition to devoting his life to advocating for global peace and non-violent protests, Thich Nhat Hanh overcame brutal political and social unrest in his native Vietnam and was nominated fo...r a Nobel Peace by his friend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This painting was commissioned and donated to SDHC by local San Diegan, Marshall Goldsmith, an internationally renowned Executive Coach, former Professor and University Dean. A devout philosophical Buddhist and practitioner of mindfulness and meditation, many of Mr. Goldsmith’s professional teachings are based on the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. The portrait’s artist, Spar Street is an American contemporary artist who specializes in mixed media large-scale works on canvas and sculpture. His artistic practice can be described as a combination of two dominant styles that originated in the late 20th century, abstraction and expressionism which are largely, but not exclusively, defined by the exaggerated use of color and movement to evoke specific self-referential emotion. This work is in the exhibition Revealed: The San Diego History Center’s Fine Art Collection. Revealed, with nearly 100 works of art from the SDHC collection, focuses exclusively on works about San Diego or by San Diego artists and provides a glimpse into the history of collecting at the History Center. Revealed comprises some of the most widely practiced genres of art: portraiture, landscapes, still life, and representations of the nude body in art. Scenes of everyday life, which symbolize larger concepts of national spirit, pride, and identity appear throughout the exhibition, spanning eras and styles. Come and experience this dynamic new revelation of our Fine Art Collection at our Balboa Park location Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm.
