Wednesday! Join us for an evening of poetry as we celebrate the latest collections of Peter Filkins and Rosanna WarrenWater/Music and So Forth. Click the link in our bio to find event login and pick up a copy of one or both of these beautiful collections See you then! About Water/Music Exploring the space between nature and culture, the poems of Water / Music anchor themselves in the timely and the timeless. Rich and diverse in their formal intricacy, they move with ease ...from narrative to meditation, from close physical observation to the haunts of memory, and from lyric sorrow to the pleasure of living in the world. Water / Music embraces and celebrates life's mystery and the soul's repose amid "talismans at twilight, the whir of birds." About So Forth A lyrical new volume from a poet beyond the achievement of all but a double handful of living American poets (Harold Bloom). With irony, in mourning tinged with eros, one of our most extraordinary poets blends the personal and the political to meditate on damage, aging, and injustice. The poems in So Forth surge back in memory, pondering guilt and forgiveness. Consciousness flows from singular to plural; identity in these poems does a round dance with other personae, with formidable women artists of the past in the powerful sequence Legende of Good Women, with pre-Socratic philosophers, and with lovers, children, and strangersthe strangest of whom is the face in the mirror. In response to griefs both historical and contemporary, So Forth contemplates the quest for the holy and traditions of the sacred.

Melissa Febos is joined by R.O. Kwon next Wednesday, April 14 to discuss her latest book, Girlhood. We’re delighted to have the opportunity to host them and can’t wait for you to check out this book. We still have limited signed copies available, so grab yours while you can. See you then About Girlhood A gripping set of stories about the forces that shape girls and the adults they become. A wise and brilliant guide to transforming the self and our society. ... In her powerful new book, critically acclaimed author Melissa Febos examines the narratives women are told about what it means to be female and what it takes to free oneself from them. When her body began to change at eleven years old, Febos understood immediately that her meaning to other people had changed with it. By her teens, she defined herself based on these perceptions and by the romantic relationships she threw herself into headlong. Over time, Febos increasingly questioned the stories she’d been told about herself and the habits and defenses she’d developed over years of trying to meet others’ expectations. The values she and so many other women had learned in girlhood did not prioritize their personal safety, happiness, or freedom, and she set out to reframe those values and beliefs. Blending investigative reporting, memoir, and scholarship, Febos charts how she and others like her have reimagined relationships and made room for the anger, grief, power, and pleasure women have long been taught to deny. Written with Febos’ characteristic precision, lyricism, and insight, Girlhood is a philosophical treatise, an anthem for women, and a searing study of the transitions into and away from girlhood, toward a chosen self.

Monday, Feb. 8 at 6pm PT. Mark Wunderlich reads from and discusses his latest collection, God of Nothingness, with Diane Seuss. We’re so excited to be hosting two stellar contemporary poets. Mark’s book is available now in-store and online, and you can preorder Diane’s collection, Frank, from us as well. Zoom login available at greenapplebooks.com/event Mark Wunderlich’s poems are alarmingly wise, lyrically charged, and built out of an almost otherworldly clarity. Traversing the hard artifacts of familial memory and the loss and cruelty of this earthly plane, Wunderlich makes an argument not for beauty but for a clear-eyed resilience. God of Nothingness is a book that is as devastating as it is life-affirming, a weapon that both wounds and saves.Ada Limón

More about Fake Accounts here: A darkly funny take on the residue from the Trump era, including the pleasures of lying and the comfort found in conspiracy theories. After our narrator learns her boyfriend has a secret life as an online right-wing crank, she decamps for Berlin where she tries on new personalities of her own among strangers. For fans of Ottessa Moshfegh and Zadie Smith, and those in doomed relationships with their phones. Oyler is the best literary critic of her generation and now one of its best novelists, too.Benjy

Very exciting announcement! Local author and friend of the store Rebecca Handler’s debut novel, Edie Richter is Not Alone, is available for preorder! Signed and personalized copies available! Just be sure to write specify in your order comment who you would like the book made out to. Happy to be collaborating with @unnamedpress on this. Publication date is March 9, 2021. Congrats Rebecca! Repost @unnamedpress COVER REVEALWe are thrilled to share that @onewomanparty’s... debut novel #EdieRichterIsNotAlone will be out in March 2021. Matter-of-fact Edie Richter is not afraid to speak her mind. She is cutting and funny, and her direct manner belies her lack of direction. As she moves with her husband from San Francisco to Perth, Australia, she must contend with her complex emotions surrounding her father's recent death, and the life she could have led. @asgreer calls it "Hilariously heartbreakingly honest... a perfect book." and @vendelavida says "Handler’s writing is spare and sharp and brings to mind the work of Mary Robison and Lorrie Moore."
