Reflections about Mother’s Day... On this day, Mother’s Day, some of us will joyfully share a meal with, call, or connect by Zoom with our mothers. Some of us have lost our mothers, and this day is a tender and painful reminder of this loss, their lives and legacy. Some of us have complicated or difficult relationships with our moms, or maybe we don’t know our biological mothers and will celebrate with our adopted moms. Some of us are moms, stepmoms, and/or grandmothers and a...re being celebrated with flowers, cards, breakfast in bed, or calls from across the country. Some of us weren’t able to or didn’t have children, and this day reminds us that we aren’t mothers, a reality which may or may not be painful. Some of us have lost or are estranged from a child, and Mother’s Day heightens our grief. Motherhood brings to mind images of strength, unselfish love, loyalty, kindness, compassion, responsibility, creativity, and fierce commitment. When I lived in Washington DC, my church gave a rose to every woman at church each Mother’s Day. My pastor celebrated the ways that all women "mother" others by bringing life and love to our shared world, by mothering colleagues, friends, nieces and nephews, mentees, and the children of our friends and neighbors. On this Mother’s Day, may we honor the mothers in our lives as well as the influence of mothers in society and the unyielding love and care for others we call motherhood, wherever we have found it and in whatever ways we have found to cultivate it within ourselves. And wherever you are with Mother’s Day, and whoever you count as the mother figures and children in your life, may you experience God’s loving presence this weekend, a God who mothers us with tenderness, compassion, and grace. A God who knows us intimately, adores and delights in us, and walks with us in our joys and sorrows. In Isaiah 66:13 God says to his people, "As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you."
