Dr. Conrad Shayo, a professor in the Department of Information and Decision Sciences, an advisor, and a cooperative member for WorkAbility IV believes, Making a living off of giving is rewarding. Born in Tanzania, which located on the eastern coast of Africa, he attended Catholic school there throughout junior high and high school. For his bachelor’s degree, he received a scholarship to study accounting and obtained his degree in finance from the University of Dar Es Salaa...m. Dr. Shayo’s first job was as a planning and distribution manager for an educational supply company where he became interested in computers and information science and went back to the university. He received a full-ride scholarship to come to the U.S. where he achieved his Doctorate in Information Science from the Claremont Graduate University. Dr. Shayo started his career at CSUSB as an assistant professor in the Information and Decision Sciences Department, which led him to work full time with the university. Dr. Conrad Shayo believes networking and having a mentor are critical to success. He uses his personal experience as an example. While working as a planning and distribution manager, the Dean of the university where he got his bachelor’s degree and his mentor, met with him every month to provide pivotal advice which led him to his current career. His mentor also persuaded him to go back to his alma mater and join the teaching faculty. Dr. Shayo says that having a mentor is important because they see things you don’t see and can advise you by providing useful tips in areas where you need improvement. Dr. Shayo is a great mentor himself giving advice and guiding CSUSB students struggling to select a major or career. He suggests choosing something you are good at, commit to it, and give it your all. The only way to succeed is to practice good habits, have a daily schedule, keep yourself honest, and know what matters most. His wise words and guidance motivate many students to be the best they can be.

EMPLOYERS IDENTIFY FOUR MUST HAVE CAREER READINESS COMPETENCIES FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), there are four career readiness competencies that employers value most in their new college hires. Through their Job Outlook 2019 survey, NACE asked employers to rank how essential eight career readiness competencies (i.e., critical thinking/problem solving, teamwork/collaboration, professionalism/work ethic, oral/writ...ten communications, digital technology, leadership, career management, and global/multi-cultural fluency) are and how they rate recent graduates’ competency on each. The survey revealed that critical thinking/problem solving, teamwork/collaboration, professionalism/work ethic, and oral/written communications are the top four essential competencies to employers. Moreover, for the past three years, these competencies have remained unchanged in the rankings. Ranking again at the top of the list of competencies is critical thinking/problem solving. Teamwork/collaboration, professionalism/work ethic, and oral/written communications ranked second through fourth and are categorized as essential. It is also important to note that digital technology was the fifth essential competency, and leadership fell to sixth place. Leadership skills also decreased in importance when employers review a resume. Overall, the four competencies mentioned are incredibly helpful for students to keep in mind when applying for jobs or editing their resumes to make a positive impression. The WorkAbility IV programs offers several workshops on building these competences so reach out to your career counselor today!
