Often times when you hear stories about Central Avenue from the 1920s to 1950s the conversation usually centers around its jazz legacy. But Central Avenue during that time was far more than a jazz scene, it was a thriving middle-class community of African American entrepreneurs and business people. The Dunbar Hotel and Club Alabam are two of the more popular establishments but do you know about the California Eagle newspaper (formerly The Owl, established in 1897 by John and... James Neimore)? The California Eagle which was located on Central Avenue was owned by Charlotta Spears, the first African American woman to own and operate a newspaper. Have you heard of Liberty Savings and Loan (organized in 1924)? It was the first African American Savings and Loan in the west. Even today, the Lincoln Theatre (known as the West Coast Apollo) still stands on 23rd and S. Central Avenue. Many entertainers of note graced its stage: Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Sammy Davis Jr., Fats Domino, B.B. King and so many more. Tune in on channel 35 (LA City residents) or everyone at www.centralavejazzfest.com Monday, Dec. 14th at 7:30pm pst for a discussion about Central Avenue Angels Walk (a self-guided heritage trail) to learn more about these historical landmarks and what to expect from the upcoming opening of the Angels Walk on Central Avenue. #centralavejazzfest #jazz #music #free #virtual #southla #thenew9th #centralavenue
