On National STEM Day we want to recognize our STEM sponsor SMUD. Our partnership not only helps make our math support possible everyday, but also has meant that our students have access to engaging hands on projects like light up greeting cards. Thank you for being a City Year and STEM champion!
Thank you Bank of America for your generous donation of 50,000 disposable masks! Not only will these masks support our AmeriCorps members’ safety, but we will also be providing our school partners with a portion of this gift. Here are a few ways these masks will be making an impact for them: Rosa Parks K-8 - We will be using them with families who visit RP campus for material and meal distribution. Teachers who teach on campus have them and students will have access to them when they return because we will put them in all the classrooms." Leataata Floyd Elem. - "At this time, we use masks in the front office for staff or parents who have forgotten to bring masks. When school returns, it will likely be the same. We are open to sharing since they are donating a lot!"
As an organization that supports civic leadership, City Year Sacramento encourages you to use your voice andvote this election day.
"A highlight of my service so far has been playing 'Miss Mia Says' with my 2nd graders. One of my roles in the virtual classroom is leading energizers and brain breaks to help the students prepare their minds and bodies for learning. I tried out several different videos, but I wanted to be more involved in the activity. My version of Simon Says was a success! I saw high participation, and we had a lot of fun. I especially liked that I could incorporate mindfulness and exercise into one game." - First Year ACM Mia, serving at Father Keith B. Kenny Elm.
City Year Sacramento Alums grab your bagged lunch and make sure to join us on November 18th! We will be hosting a virtual alumni lunch to update you on the site, what’s to come, and give you the chance to connect with faces old and new. Keep an eye out next week for the information to join.
I love supporting the impact that our Corps members make in the lives of the students they help. Their enthusiasm and commitment to education is contagious! - Board Member Julie Quinn
"This past week was my third week of service and the sixth week of school. My partner teacher greets students as they enter the Zoom classroom, and I have slowly transitioned from greeting everyone in the chat to greeting them by name as I have learned how to pronounce them correctly. Earlier this week, one of my students, who is an English Language Learner, came to class and suddenly said, "Hi Ms. Ada!" I had been sending her simple instructions in the chat so she could put them through a translator, but it was the first time she had initiated any conversation. Now, she's slowly getting more comfortable unmuting herself to ask questions, and I feel so proud of her efforts and her improvement over our short three weeks together." - First Year ACM Ada, serving at Fern Bacon Middle School #makebetterhappen

I’m proud to sit on CYSac’s board because they are providing the much needed academic, social and emotional supports to students and teachers to ensure our community has an opportunity to thrive. - Board Member Jen Ablog
"In one of the breakout rooms, we were discussing a story we were reading when a boy answered my question in an enthusiastic and funny impersonation of the mother from the story. Matching his enthusiasm, I celebrated his correct answer. In a calm voice he responded, yes, I finally made you laugh. His words made me stop and smile. It was the moment I fully realized how much joy they still found in learning new things and in building relationships, even in the virtual setting." First Year ACM Meredith, serving at Oak Ridge Elementary School #makebetterhappen
Students can ride transit for free! Sacramento Regional Transit District has extended the #RydeFreeRT program through September 30, 2021. Due to distribution limitations resulting from COVID-19, all a student/youth needs to ride for free is a student ID card or a RydeFreeRT card, no sticker required to ride. Students/youth who don’t have an ID or card can visit SacRT’s Customer Service and Sales Center located at 1225 R Street (adjacent to the 13th Street Station) to get a card. Learn more about the fare-free transit for youth program at rydefreert.com. #FreeTransitforYouth #StudentsRideFree
