Carmel Gun Club 09.01.2021

This coming Saturday, January the 23d, will be conducting our Intro to High Power and an M1 Carbine Match. Intro to High Power - This will be a standard 50-round (plus 8 sighters) National Match course of fire. All stages will be fired at a distance of 100yds. We will take just a few moments prior to each string of fire for each relay to review the basics of the position and use of the sling. M1 Carbine - This is a CMP-sanctioned Carbine match. As such you must use and or...iginal M1 Carbine, or one of the acceptable equivalent copies. This will be a 40-round match, plus and sighter period. The rifles must be equipped with the M1 Carbine sling that is attached to the forestock and buttstock of the rifle at all times. This will require the use of the "hasty" sling technique. Depending on the time, an optional lunch will be served either between the matches or following the Carbine match. If you haven't done so already, PLEASE RSVP by responding to the e-mail. We have two M1 Carbines available for loan, and plenty of .30 Carbine ammo available for sale. See you next Saturday!! President Carmel Gun Club

On January 23d we hold our first match of the new year. We have really had a good response to the Intro to High Power match from our non-member mailing list I used last week to announce the match. Hopefully, we will have several newcomers that will become permanent participants in future matches. The match will be shot at 100yds from the Swiss Club firing line. We have the targets to simulate firing at 200, 300, and 600 yds. This will a 50 round National Match course of f...ire, plus 8 sighters. Following the Intro to High Power we will conduct a CMP-sanctioned M1 Carbine Match. Don't have one? No problem. We have 2 to loan, and by sharing them, along with mine and some Pete will bring we should be able to cover quite a few of you. This is FUN rifle. We also have plenty of CMP-supplied Carbine ammo. This is 40 round match plus sighters. See the attached bulletin for more details. As usual, an optional lunch will be served either between matches, or after the Carbine match. PLEASE RSVP by responding to [email protected]. Tell me if you would like to borrow a Garand, a Carbine, and/or if you will be having lunch. See you at the range!! President Carmel Gun Club

Something to dream about over the holidays. Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and Happy, healthy, prosperous, and adventurous 2021! https://thecmp.org/late-to-the-party-paula-crenshaw-become/

The focus of the January gathering is getting you started in service rifle shooting. It features a clinic for beginners. But afterwards, if you own or can access an M-1 Carbine, there's a match for you! If you don't have an M-1 carbine you can use another rifle. You can test out your Garand skills, or your bolt gun skills. You won't win or place in the M-1 Carbine match, but imagine shooting with an SKS or a Marlin .357 or a Steyr M-95. An Arisaka or an M-44 Mosin Nagant. Shooting these would simply be for fun, since you aren't officially competing, but definitely it would be unforgettable! https://thecmp.org/m1-carbine-match-features-separate-clas/

The club is having a beginning service rifle clinic and an M-1 Carbine match in January! This is an annual favorite. If you’ve ever wanted to get started in service rifle shooting, this is the month!

They are parts guns, but they are also a precious part of genuine American history. If you can afford to apply, please don't miss this opportunity to support the Civilian Marksmanship Program. https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/1911-information/

Where could we do this?

Carmel Gun Club 01.11.2020

Hmmm. We could do this! It’s like Swiss 300 meter shooting, except...

Carmel Gun Club 01.11.2020

Old fashioned manually operated targets. Feel the heritage....

Carmel Gun Club 30.10.2020

A great bolt action rapid fire at today’s match.

Carmel Gun Club 30.10.2020

Aside from the fact that we can't see anything, these COVID masks are great on the range.

Carmel Gun Club 27.10.2020

Nicely cool day with deliciously clear air, and a good turnout. We delighted in a great congregation of Garand and bolt gun shooters. Originally this was going to be an 88 round match but a group conference decided to make it a 58 round competition. New shooters! We are blessed.

The C Company 194th Tank Battalion Trophy Match! Commemorating the sacrifice of our ancestors in World War II on a blessedly drizzling California morning!

"The pits" where we manage the manually-operated targets of the Monterey County Swiss Rifle Club, out to 300 yards.

This coming Saturday we will conduct our last match of 2020, a 50-round (plus 5 sighters) As-Issued Service Rifle Match. Although any and all rifles are always welcome, only those rifles that would have been used in Company C's defense of the Bataan Peninsula will allowed to compete for the perpetual cup and plaque. Those would be the M1 Garand, 1903//A3 and M1917 "Enfield". These rifles were all in service with the US Army in early 1942 and as such could have been used in... the battle. Not sure about M1 Carbines, but I will investigate and include them if I find they were in the Philippines at the time. Usual check in 7:30 - 8:15, safety brief at 8:30. The awarding of the Company C Cup and CMP Achievement Pins will be made during the optional lunch that follows the match. If you have not done so already, PLEASE let us know if you will be attending, having lunch and/or need to borrow an M1. Unfortunately, masking requirements (except on the actual firing line) still apply. See you next Saturday!! President Carmel Gun Club

Final reminder - This coming Saturday, the 24th, we hold our last CMP Cup match of the year. This will be an 80 round (plus 8 sighters) match. Masking requirements still apply. If you haven't already done so, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WILL ATTEND. A sumptuous, but optional, COSTCO-based lunch will be served following the match.... See you next Saturday!! A note from our president! Heads up for the November As-Issued match. We are going to start the day with the RJ Thomas Long Range Pistol Match. We will unload our gear (rifles, pistols or both) at the 200yd lion. The pistol shooters will move up to a 100yd line from the existing pits and shoot at the SR target. We will then move back to the 200yd line for the second string. When the pistol match is complete we will start the rifle match. Same SR target for both the pi...stol and rifles. In the mean time, see you on October 24th for our last CMP Cup/Highpower Match of the year. President Carmel Gun Club

Carmel Gun Club 23.09.2020

Seems like we just had a similar match, but the December match comes early to avoid the Holidays. On December 12th we'll do it again! CMP As-Issued Rifle Match. 50 rounds, plus 5 sighters (the B course of fire.) Check in between 7:30 - 8:15, safety brief at 8:30, start shooting at 9:00... Optional lunch and CMP Achievement Pins to be awarded following the match. PLEASE LET US KNOW AT [email protected] IF YOU WILL BE ATTENDING, if you will need to borrow an M1 and/or if you will be having lunch. See you on the 12th! President Carmel Gun Club

88 shots including 8 sighter shots and 80 for record, to 300 yards. Almost perfect weather. COVID PROTOCOLS all the way! We did not have a designated photographer so not so many images this month.

Carmel Gun Club 13.09.2020

This coming Saturday we finally hold our first CMP Cup match of the year! This will be an 80 round (plus 8 sighters) match. If you have not done so already, please let me know if you are coming. We will serve an optional lunch following the match.... Unfortunately, Monterey County COVID-19 social distancing rules still apply. Please wear a mask at all time you are not actually on the firing line. See you at the range! President Carmel Gun Club

Carmel Gun Club 09.09.2020

First the competitors fired at 100 yards with standard service pistols, then 200 yards. Afterwards the club held a Civilian Marksmanship Program Vintage Service Rifle Match at 200 yards. Wonderful! Thanks to all who took the photos, competed, and made the match possible

Carmel Gun Club 02.09.2020

Hmmm I don’t think we have the layout to do this, with only 300 yards. Still, it’s an interesting thought. Back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s we had the Evil Commie Gun match which included running and AK-47’s and SKS’s. More of that? https://www.military.com//new-scoring-standards-coming-mar

Carmel Gun Club 21.08.2020

Note that the SIG 210 is now an approved Civilian Markmanship Program service pistol. So if we intend to shoot Swiss competitions as well, a SIG 210 is a decent choice! Also Smith and Wesson .38 Special revolvers! https://thecmp.org/wp-conte//CMPApprovedServicePistols.pdf

Just a quick reminder that we will conduct a CMP Cup match on Saturday, September 26th. This is an 80-round (+8 sighters) event. Check in between 7:30-8:15. Optional lunch, blah, blah, blah . . . As always, PLEASE let me know if you are coming, and if you will be wanting to borrow one of our M1s.... See you then. President Carmel Gun Club

Something BIG happened at last weekend’s match. Two of our shooters were awarded the prestigious Bronze Feldmeisterschaftmedaille (Field Shooting Master) Medal! This is a first for Carmel Gun Club! In each of the last eight years These two shooters have earned a Kart (Card) in the Obligatorisch and Feldschiessen matches. This is certainly a major accomplishment and something for which they can be justly proud!! Congratulations to these dedicated veteran shooters for this aw...ard and for their dedicated support of Swiss shooting. President Carmel Gun Club

Carmel Gun Club 25.06.2020

At this month's long range pistol match in rural Central California. 100 yards with a service pistol, followed by 200 yards! Astonishing that a hand-held normal service pistol can hit paper at that range.

Carmel Gun Club 09.06.2020

200 yards with a .38 Special!!! November's long range service pistol match was a great success.

Carmel Gun Club 24.05.2020

We are good to go for Saturday! Even though Monterey County has returned to Tier Purple, outdoor sporting events are still not restricted - except for standard mask and social distancing requirements. We ask that you wear a mask at check in, during the safety brief, and at all time your relay is not actually on the firing line. IF you have cold-like symptoms and/or a cough, please stay home and get well. Weather is forecasted to be EXCELLENT!! See you Saturday.... President Carmel Gun Club

Carmel Gun Club 15.05.2020

Imagine watching shooting like this, with a service pistol, next Saturday. Only for the first time we'll be using the standard high power rifle 200 yard target, so it should be even easier!

Carmel Gun Club 13.05.2020

Next Saturday we conduct the first of two CMP As-Issued Service Rifle matches, and the RJ Thomas Long Range Pistol Match. We will follow our standard check in time of 7:30 - 8:15, followed by the safety brief at 8:30, with first rounds down range at 9:00. We will start the day with the long range pistol match at 9:00. This should be over within an hour, or so. Plan on starting the rifle match around 10:30. As previously announced, the rifle match will be fired on the CMP C...ourse A, meaning 30 rounds for record, plus 5 sighters. An optional lunch will be served following the rifle match. If you haven't already done so, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WILL BE ATTENDING, if you will be having lunch, and/or if you will need to borrow one of our M1 rifles. From this weekend's COVID-aware "Smokezenfest" with wildfires all around us. Awards. We take great pride in participating in the genuine Swiss national shooting programs!

Some images of a Schutzenfests past, the Vancouver North American match in 2004! We sent a team.

Carmel Gun Club 27.09.2019

Our own John Sutter medal, from early in the 21st Century. Designed for a 4-event schutzenfest. In the 2005 Schutzenfest this shooter medaled in three events. Had she medaled in four events that little palm leaf would be gold. Two events would create a medal with no leaves at all. Medaling in one event would result in the medal with no long back ribbon. Unlike most Swiss medals, these were usually presented at the end of the event or the following month, rather than the following year. Something traditional.

SWISS RIFLE IN ONE WEEK!!!! Have you RSVP'd?? I need to know if (1) you are coming, (2) if you will be having lunch and (3) if you need to borrow one of our K31s. RSVP TO [email protected]. As I explained in my previous post we will be limiting this match to 30 participants in order that we be in compliance with State and County COVID-19 social distancing requirements - 10 on the firing line, 10 keeping score and 10 in the pits. So far 26 persons have said they are ...coming. That means we have four remaining firing points to be filled. If you are number 31, or greater, I will let you know. We always have a few members that have committed to attend, then are unable to make it. I will send out an update next Thursday or Friday to let you know if there have been any last minute cancellations. See you next Saturday!! President Carmel Gun Club

Carmel Gun Club 26.07.2019

Email [email protected] to reserve your spot for our June 27th match. Due to COVID, spaces are definitely limited. The annual meeting follows after the match!

Carmel Gun Club 12.07.2019

Great news! "Per Monterey County Department of Health guidance the Monterey County Swiss Rifle Club will reopen tomorrow, June 12th. As a result they have granted our request to hold a Swiss rifle match on the 27th. The match will consist of the Obligatorisches 300m and the Feldschiessen 300m. I have attached a copy of the scorecard for more details. We must still follow social distancing guidelines. As a result I am suggesting a maximum of 30 participants, first come fir...st served. If I inform you that you are number 31, or 32, etc., I would suggest you still show up. We always have some members say they are coming, then don't show up for various reasons. If you RSVP you will be given priority over walk-ins. The reason for a max of 30 has to do with social distancing. With 30 participants we can have three relays of 10 - 10 on the firing line, 10 keeping score and 10 in the pits, all 6' - 8' apart. Please bring and wear a mask. You should wear the mask while at the range, except when in the firing position. Remember, we have six K31's for loan and plenty of 7.5 Swiss ammo for sale. When you RSVP please tell me if you want to borrow one of our rifles. Following the match we will serve a hot dog lunch and hand out a WHOLE BUNCH of medals from 2019!! Again, PLEASE RSVP so I know how many hot dogs to buy! President Carmel Gun Club"

Carmel Gun Club 26.06.2019

A message from the President! "Sorry, but still no good news. I did get a response from Monterey County Supervisor Mary Parker saying that golf and tennis were now OK, but still no word on rifle ranges. IF we have a June match it will be a Swiss rifle match and it will be held on the 27th. Things are opening up bit by bit so stay tuned. It may be with very short notice so pencil in the 27th in case if get the green light. I called the Monterey County Health Department an...d spoke at length about opening the ranges. He put me on hold for a very long time before coming back to say no. I honestly think they hadn't even thought about it. IF YOU LIVE IN MONTEREY COUNTY you might try giving your district supervisor a call, but as I have said before the real power lies with the Health Department. Regardless of where you live you might want to call the Health Department and let them know you would like to see the ranges opened as soon as possible. Their number is: 831-755-4500 At this point I am not sure what else to do. President Carmel Gun Club"

Carmel Gun Club 14.04.2019

A message from our president! "I have now written to both our county supervisor and department of health. As a member suggested, it is the health department that holds all the power. I have had no response, except for them to say they received my request. It was suggested that we just hold the match anyway. The chances of getting caught are probably quite low, but remember - it's not our range!! If we were to hold the match and we got caught, or if someone caught the vir...us, the consequences from either the county and/or the Monterey County Swiss Rifle Club could be catastrophic. Our next match is scheduled for June 21st, Father's Day. This match, like last year's, was held in conjunction with the Swiss Club's Father's Day BBQ. Even if the range was opened for shooting I doubt the group size restrictions will cause the cancellation of the event. As a result, I am going to try to move the June match to 27th, a Saturday vs Sunday, and the more traditional 4th Saturday of the month. I certainly hope all of you are virus free and that on someday soon I will see you at the range!! President Carmel Gun Club"

Carmel Gun Club 06.04.2019

A message from our president! "Normally I would be sending out a two week notice, but as of today all rifle and archery ranges in Monterey County are still closed. Golf courses have been reopened. I wrote our District Supervisor (Mary Adams) and asked that if golf courses can be opened how about opening up the rifle ranges? I reminded her that by their very design (distance between firing points) we would be practicing social distance. No response, other than that she had... received the request. So . . . stand by to stand by. I will send out a GO message the instant I get a positive response. I believe the schedule actually calls for a CMP Cup Match, but our first match will also be our required annual meeting, and I have a slew of Swiss medals to hand out!! President Carmel Gun Club"

Carmel Gun Club 30.03.2019

Seems like a good time to review this. Our matches are currently suspended while the Coronavirus shutdown plays out. But we'll be back! Meanwhile, get ready!

Carmel Gun Club 23.03.2019

Carmel Gun Club 16.03.2019

While we wait for the Coronavirus restrictions to pass, here's an interesting video about shooting the .45 ACP at 200 yards and beyond! Some of our pistol matches include shooting out to 200 yards, but does the bullet have any energy out there? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDnsGe0QwhA

Carmel Gun Club 06.03.2019

While we wait for the Coronavirus era to pass, learning how to read wind for rifle shooting is an epic skill! What else can we learn and prepare for the glorious day when our matches can resume? Hand loading? Organizing? Dry firing? History?

Carmel Gun Club 17.02.2019

Match Cancelled! From our president: "I'm sure you saw this coming, but I naively thought we could pull this off. Yesterday, however, Monterey County issued a mandatory shelter in place order. No travel except for essentials. This follows a similar order issued by Santa Clara County. This was to be our last set of EIC matches. I was ignoring the 2020 CMP EIC pistol match rules which now dictate that we must conduct the matches on a range that utilizes moving/flipping targ...ets. Stationary targets, like we have been using, are no longer authorized. Our next match is on April 25th. This will be our first Swiss rifle match of the year, and our annual meeting and award presentation. Keep your fingers crossed. President Carmel Gun Club"

Carmel Gun Club 12.02.2019

An Important message from our president! "I am so sorry to have to do this, and for the late notice. Strangely, given all of the other cancellations you may have heard about, this has nothing to do with the coronavirus. All of the officers are committed to other events, or we have work conflicts that will not allow us to be present for the entire day to run the match. Only two members are NRA certified Range Safety Officers. The Monterey County Swiss Rifle Club requires a... certified RSO be present at each match. I will be competing in Arizona and the other qualified member has declined to participate in this event. At this time I have every intention of conducting the EIC pistol matches as scheduled on the 28th. On a positive note this will give each of you some extra time to practice with your .22 or Service Pistol. Stay healthy and I hope to see as many of you as possible on the 28th. President Carmel Gun Club"

Carmel Gun Club 02.02.2019

A message from our president! "Back to the pits!! On March 21st we conduct our second NRA High Power Rifle Match (50 rounds + 8 sighters). Thanks to a great turnout yesterday afternoon we got all of the targets repasted and pit boxes repacked. We are ready to go! As always we have six M1 Garands cleaned up and ready to loan, along with a dwindling supply of .30-06 ammunition.... An optional lunch will be served following the match. PLEASE RSVP, to include letting me know if you will be having lunch and/or be wanting to borrow an M1. In three weeks, on the 28th, we conduct our .22LR and Service Pistol EIC matches, but more on that next week. Stephen Hurst President Carmel Gun Club"
