Scheduling a Feeding Routine Long waiting times between each meal may cause dogs to develop food anxiety. If we are feeding our dogs only once a day, then this will intensify their longing. As a result, our dogs will eat fast and even overfeed themselves to immediately ease the hunger and as preparation for the next waiting time. Instead of feeding our dogs once a day, we can divide their daily ration into two to three parts. It is better to feed the dogs a number of times a day in smaller portions than feed them a big serving all at one time.

What Are the Most Common Senior Cat Diseases? Dental disease: Dental resorptive lesions are one of the most common diseases, affecting over 80 percent of cats at 5 years of age. Osteoarthritis: Arthritis in cats is a degenerative joint disease that affects over 90 percent of cats at 10 years of age.... Kidney disease: Kidney disease in cats is found in over 20 percent of all cats. Symptoms of kidney disease in cats can be as subtle as increased drinking or larger clumps of urine in the cat litter box, (a great reason to use clumping cat litter!) inappetence or slight weight loss. Hyperthyroidism: Weight loss, increased appetite and vocalization are hallmarks of hyperthyroidism in cats. Inflammatory bowel disease: Vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss are the most typical symptoms of this very common middle-age and senior cat problem. Diabetes: This is a common disease of older cats, especially those that are overweight. Cancer: Intestinal, mammary and oral cancers are all more common in senior cats. Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome: 80 percent of cats have cognitive dysfunction at 15 years of age and older. Halloween Pet Safety Tips Halloween’s fun for people, but for pets, maybe not so much. From a pet’s perspective, Halloween can be truly terrifying, says AAHA Senior Veterinary Officer Heather Loenser, DVM. Strangers in costumes invading their home every 10 minutessuper scary! ... Here are some helpful hints to keep Halloween Safe for everyone: ~ Hide the treats behind a cabinet door Keep the candy away from pets. First of all, there are wrappers: Eating a bowl-full of wrappers can easily result in surgery for a stomach obstruction. Second, a lot of people already know that chocolate is bad for dogs and cats, but fewer people are aware of the dangers of xylitol. This common sugar substitute is found in all kinds of sugarless Halloween treats and it’s highly toxic to dogs. And while there’s no published data that says it’s harmful to cats, there have been anecdotal reports of xylitol sensitivity in both cats and ferrets. ~ Be careful with costumesfor pets and people Almost 29 million pet owners plan to dress their pets up for Halloween this year, and they’ll spend nearly half a billion dollars on pet costumes, more than double what they spent in 2010. If your clients dress up their pets, they should make sure the costume is comfortable and has no dangling pieces the pet can chew off. The costume shouldn’t interfere with the pet’s movement, sight, hearing, or breathing. Wearing a costume can be very stressful to some pets, so encourage owners to give the pet a chance to try on the costume before the big night to make sure the pet is comfortable. Also, the decorations on costumes for people, especially strings, can cause intestinal obstructions if swallowed. ~ Keep pets away from the door With so many people coming and going on the doorstep, there’s a better than average opportunity for pets to scoot outside unseen. Unless they’re extremely socialized and well behaved, owners should consider keeping them in a separate room during peak trick-or-treating time. And they should make sure the pet is wearing a collar with ID tags or is microchipped, so they can easily be identified or located if they do manage to slip away during the sugar-fueled excitement. Owners should take a moment to make sure their registration for their pet’s microchip is up to date by contacting their microchip company. ~ Keep the glow away from pets Jack-o-lanterns are fun, but knocking them over, not so much. A cat or dog can easily tip over a lit pumpkin and start a fire, or risk burning themselves. Likewise, owners should keep Halloween glowsticks and other glow-in-the-dark decorations away from their pets. Although the liquid that makes them glow probably isn’t toxic, it tastes terrible and can make pets salivate excessively and act oddly. Spread the word and help keep pets safe. Happy Halloween! Modern advances in medicinal technology have made it extremely safe and manageable, despite an animal’s nature, breed, size, or age. Overall, if your vet thinks your pet is in need of the procedure, then it would be best to follow suit. All those risks are outweighed by the dangers of not pushing through with the operation, so it’s best to trust your doctor’s plan and choose what’s best for your pet in the long run.
