American Ambulance is focused on its mission of caring for people; meaning all people within the diverse communities we serve. We are a service organization and generally don’t make political statements. However, attempting to be apolitical while our community suffers is not working. As Howard Zinn said, "You can't be neutral on a moving train." We want to be clear that American Ambulance stands with the Black community and others who oppose racial injustices. We must oppose ...the systemic racism that permeates our society and is responsible for the deaths of people like George Floyd, a single individual representing many, many more. The systemic inequalities our community experiences are pervasive and affect all of us. I have had several honest conversations with Black employees to listen to their feelings, get their perspective on recent events, and learn how we can better support them and the Black community. While I will never fully understand the struggles faced by Black Americans, it’s clear we all need to be committed to change not with just words, but with meaningful action within our company and the community. We take pride in having a diverse workforce, but we have much more work to do. We commit to working with leaders in the Black Community to identify employee candidates and offering scholarships and job opportunities as a means to further increase our company’s diversity and better integrate with our community. We will also use our platform as an industry leader to support local Black American groups toward their goals of inclusion and racial equality. We have been members of the Black and Hispanic chambers of commerce for years but should be more actively involved. We will become actively engaged to support these organizations. I know this is not enough, but these will be steps in the right direction. Finally, for those who are fighting for change, to those suffering from the poison of racism, to our employees, and especially the Black community: You are not alone. American Ambulance stands with you - you have my word on that. Until change happens to address these deep inequities in our society, we will never truly be the community we strive to be. -Todd Valeri
