Have you met our 2020 Jean Roth Driskel Scholar: Khan Muhammad? Here’s Khan’s update of what he’s got going at the moment: "In this project, wallpaper which has been historically synonymous with domestic chores and femininity becomes the spotlight of architectural form and place keeping. The wallpaper was designed to hang in the dwelling and tells a narrative about space. In some instances, the wallpaper displays figural images that tell domestic stories about the rooms... they decorate. In other instances, the 2-dimensional image is projected into 3-dimensional space and defines the volumes of the architecture. Residences 945 offers studio, family, and roommate dwellings alongside public and private amenities. Currently I am seeking a May 2021 - Aug 2022 internship to fulfill my IPAL program requirements which helps students obtain the architectural license after graduation. I desire to elevate and empower my community as they have done with me. The JRD scholarship has enabled me to continue and extend my service to my community at large through these hard times." Thanks, Khan, for sharing with us your latest and greatest! - All of us at AIAPF & The Jean Roth Driskel Scholarship

Today’s featured project: ArtCenter Terri and Jerry Kohl Commons, by Darin Johnstone Architects In 2014 a prominent art and design school purchased 128,000 square foot, six story, 1980’s mid-rise building at the end of the historic 110 freeway. The programmatic charge for this project was to radically enlarge and transform a small existing ground level café, and to create new vertical connections in the formerly stratified office building. At this new nexus we were asked to ...create a student commons including a café with a full-service kitchen, and an indoor / outdoor environment where students could dine, hang out, and work. All tables, built-ins, and casework were designed by the architect, including the power equipped centralized ‘super table’. The need for more vertical connectivity resulted in two new stairs; An open featured stair connecting level one and two and an enclosed stair down to the parking levels. Overall, the project creates vertical connectivity, an area for food, rest, work, conversation and culture. See more

(3 of 3) Today’s featured project by architect, Elsye Alam. The Kaweah Rockhouse. The project, completed in 2018, is a new construction single family residence which sits on a challenging steep vacant lot in Pasadena’s San Rafael Hills, with a narrow frontage of less than 40 ft wide that opens up to more than 80 ft wide in the rear. The proposed structure gently touches the ground with a minimal footprint of 765 sf to accommodate 2,380 sf of three bedroom two and a half bath... program into two stories with an attached garage on top connected by a bridge driveway to the street. The project thrusts the balance of the contrasting elements on minimal frontage present and maximal rear view opportunities, concealed frontage and transparent rear, minimum footprint and maximum buildable envelope, warm board-and-batten exterior under intense Southern California sun and cool graphical modernist interior with peaceful soft daylight thru out the day. #aia #aiapf #pasadenaarchitecture #design #sitedriven #contextiskey #architecture #archdaily #architect #designer #architecturephotography #arch #architecturelovers #architecturedaily
