During the second stage of labour, a combination of bones including your sacrum ac...tually move backwards and in doing so, increases the diameter of your pelvis. This is what is known as the opening of the back. This is completely normal and is, in fact, an integral part of a physiological birth as it allows your baby the maximum amount of space to turn as they navigate their way out into the world. In order to facilitate the opening of your back, you should use active birth positions where you are upright and leaning forwards. So cool right! And while your pelvis is expanding, your baby's head is moulding - changing shape to fit through those pelvic bones! Your body was made to do this! And your body and your baby work together! We know who is most at risk. We know that institutionalized and personally mediated racism and implicit and explicit bias impact pregnancy outcomes. We cannot keep losing women and parents before they even have a chance to be a mother or parent. From the March of Dimes:... Maternal death is when a woman dies during pregnancy or up to 42 days after the end of pregnancy from health problems related to pregnancy. Maternal death and maternal mortality mean the same thing. Pregnancy-related death is when a woman dies during pregnancy or within 1 year after the end of her pregnancy from health problems related to pregnancy. These deaths may be caused by: * A health condition (like heart disease) that was diagnosed before pregnancy that may worsen due to pregnancy * A pregnancy complication, like preeclampsia (a serious blood pressure condition that can happen after the 20th week of pregnancy or after giving birth) * Treatment received during pregnancy From the CDC For 2018, the maternal mortality rate is 17.4 per 100,000 live births in the United States. While approximately 700 pregnancy-related deaths occur each year, 2/3 of these deaths are considered to be preventable. Wide racial and ethnic gaps exist between non-Hispanic black (37.1 deaths per 100,000 live births), non-Hispanic white (14.7), and Hispanic (11.8)women. Rates also increased substantially by age, with rates for women aged 40 and over roughly eight times the rate for women under 25 (81.9 and 10.6, respectively).
