MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT PERIOD Wednesday, November 25, at 6:00pm through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 29. CHP Redding would like to remind everyone during the MEP, CHP will be actively looking for unsafe driving practices as well as helping motorists in need.... This year has presented us with many unforeseen challenges, but safety is still our priority, CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said. If you choose to travel this Thanksgiving weekend, our goal is to help motorists arrive at their destination without incident. Those who must be on the road, remember to buckle up. Proper seat belt use is the single most effective way to save a life in the event of a crash. When you are traveling for the holiday, or any time of the year, make sure everyone in the vehicle is safely secured before even starting the car, and that includes children being in the correct child safety seats. During the 2019 Thanksgiving MEP, 42 people died on California roadways. Of the 27 who died within CHP jurisdiction, 11 were not wearing seat belts. The CHP also made 867 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

We are glad the rain is finally here to put a damper... cough, cough... (pun intended) on the fire activity throughout California. However, with the wet weather approaching, now is the time to check your vehicle’s winter readiness! (wiper blades, tires for proper tread and pressure, ensure your headlights and brake lights are all functional, and if you travel in snow , blow the dust off your chains/cables and throw them in your trunk). Don’t be caught by surprise ...like the gentleman pictured below. Wet weather is no joke and ensuring your car is in tip top shape will go a long way to help you stay visible and on the road. Remember, when the road is wet, slow down, increase your following distance, and turn on your headlights. To highlight the dangers of fatigued driving, the CHP is participating in Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, November 1-8, 2020. There are more than 6,000 drowsy driving related crashes in California, each year. According to CDC studies, being awake for 18+ hours is similar to having a blood alcohol content of .05 percent. Some tips to avoid drowsy driving include getting at least seven hours of sleep a day, a consistent sleep schedule, and avoiding alcohol or medications that can cause drowsiness. Stay alert and drive without distraction not only to protect yourself, but also your passengers and other motorists. As an additional resource, Caltrans operates more than 85 Safety Roadside Rest Areas throughout the state, which can be viewed here: http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov
