We hope you'll join us here on our Facebook page as we broadcast this performance. Success is learning from past failures and sometimes getting lucky. Let us reflect through art on how to correct the wrongs we and our society have inflicted on each other. We are proud that half of this concert will feature student compositions!

Welcome to the first night of our series of opera concerts for the Spring semester! This is our first of 2 aria concerts presented by SMC Opera Theatre, with the second coming up on Tuesday 5/25 at 7pm. These concerts are the culmination of our student's work this semester in the SMC Opera Workshop and we're excited to share with you both their solo arias and a series of filmed scenes shot in a socially distanced manner. The scenes tonight tell the story of Romeo and Juliette... as depicted by the composers Charles Gounod and Vincenzo Bellini. The opera program gives opportunities to both students and community members to receive individual coaching, chances to perform, as well as instruction and masterclasses from industry professionals. It's our hope to return in the Fall semester with full productions of operas once more! And for all this we rely on your support and donations. If you would like to make a donation to support our students, you may do so here: https://santamonicacollegefoundation.org/SMC_opera.php We're also pleased to announce that the student-led SMC Opera Club will be presenting their own concert of filmed, virtually staged opera scenes this Sunday evening! Join a Voice Class at SMC! Come sing with us! Elementary (Music 50A), Intermediate (Music 50B) and Advanced (Music 57) What some former students have said: This class not only created a supportive environment and helped me improve my vocal technique, it boosted my confidence to perform. Even online, the professor still managed to help each and every student. This was very apparent each week when everyone performed their individual songs and we could see each other massivel...y improve over a short period of time. Without a doubt, this is one of the best classes at SMC for performance and other majors alike. "I got so many tools from breathing to warm-ups to exercises that have made me feel much more confident in my voice. I also loved the supportive atmosphere from the group." "Voice performance class is much more than voice or performance training. It affects all areas of the body and mind, including self-concept, general health, posture, and personal presentation." "Although we were listening and seeing each other through a screen I felt the emotions my fellow classmates experienced when singing. I learned to trust my body and breath in a whole other level. I noticed my voice getting better." "I learned not to be afraid of trying. "

SMC Concert Chorale & SMC Chamber Choir with Choral-Scholars-in-Residence Chorosynthesis Singers Featuring World Premiere of "Amendment: Righting Our Wrongs" by Melissa Dunphy Jeremiah Selvey, Conductor Wendy Moy, Guest Conductor... Gary Gray, Piano Frank Basile, Piano Sophie Stubbs, Cello Phil McGowan, Sound Engineer Access a PDF of the program at : https://sites.google.com/view/smc-choirs/nsp (It is best viewed in the Chrome browser) ---------- The Santa Monica College Music Department is pleased to host Nevertheless, She Persisted, a live webcast concert under the direction of Jeremiah Selvey, featuring virtually recorded performances by the SMC Concert Chorale and SMC Chamber Choir, with guest Choral-Scholars-In-Residence Chorosynthesis Singers. The choral event, which celebrates the 19th Amendment of the US Constitution and reflects the contemporary re-sparking of movements for racial justice and gender equality, showcases the voices of BIPOC women from the early 20th-century suffragists to present-day civil rights activists who changed the world through advocacy and composing music. The Choral Scholars in Residence, co-directed by guest conductor Wendy Moy, will premiere Melissa Dunphy’s "Amendment: Righting Our Wrongs." Composed for soprano-alto-tenor-bass (SATB) choir and cello, the work juxtaposes the voices of the founding fathers with the voices of minority women fighting for universal voting rights. This performance will also include a collage work about racial (in)justice co-composed by members of the SMC Chamber Choir and Chorosynthesis Singers. The concert is sponsored in part by the SMC Chairs of Excellence Grant and generous individual donors.
