The Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment (YPCE) Department is launching the Youth Art Expo and Contest: Your Parks, Your Future! The contest allows Sacramento youth to share stories about their experience with parks and recreation programs in their neighborhoods and communities through photos, artwork, music, performances, and videos. There is a total of $1,500 in available prizes with multiple winners by age group. Participants must be between the ages of 14 and 24. The contest deadline is July 16. Sacramento River Levee Construction Update: Construction activities continue at an aggressive pace to finish all levee improvements within the construction season. You will notice large earth moving equipment and the last of the major truck traffic hauling materials for the final stretch of levee rebuild. This will be followed by the bicycle path reconstruction and reopening in December. Construction Working Hours: Monday Saturday 7am-7pm.

The Women’s Civic Improvement received a grant to assist low income senior citizens pay their rent, utilities and to purchase food. Seniors must be 50 years or older, make less than $25,000 per year, and live within the City limits. Seniors may call 916-457-2524 to make an appointment to review eligibility and are asked to leave their name, phone number, and current ZIP code on the phone line.

The Sacramento City Council will be considering a proposed ordinance to ban the use of portable blowers when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is 101 and above to protect public health and safety. The Sacramento Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will be taking back unwanted prescription drugs on October 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Get rid of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. The Sacramento community can bring their unused or expired prescription drugs to the Pubi...c Safety Center at 5770 Freeport Boulevard in Sacramento, as well as several other sites throughout Sacramento County. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. During this Take Back Day, the DEA cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches. These items should be placed in clear zip-top bags; a limited amount of packaging will also be available on-site. To keep everyone safe, collection sites will follow local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations.
