In 2020, Progressive Transitions worked closely with the City of Oakland to help change the lives of victims and survivors of sexual exploitation while continuing our programs that work to end intimate partner violence. We wish a healthy and empowered 2021 to all of our colleagues, clients, friends, and loved ones. We have started collectively changing the way we work, live and play, worldwide. However, violence against women in the form of sexual exploitation has not chan...ged. Men who purchase women for sex acts are now susceptible to contracting COVID-19. This is resulting in the sex market descending downward. This also substantiates the realization that those who buy sex give power to sex trafficking, a billion dollar global industry. Not only does the demand for purchasing sex drive this industry, but the disenfranchisement of poor, vulnerable girls and women contributes to this societal issue. To put an end to sex trafficking and the sexual exploitation of women and girls, the demand for the purchase of sex acts must continue to be addressed through policy change, as well as changes in the laws. As of now, the lives of these women and girls remains extremely uncertain. These women and girls are at a risk of being infected with COVID-19, and at high risk of suffering abuse every day at the hands of sex buyers (johns), sex traffickers and pimps. The physical and psychological harm that perpetrators inflict on these women and girls involved in the life is forever.
