AB 855, my bill which would allow judicial branch employees to switch Columbus Day as a paid holiday for California Native American Day won approval in the Sena...te Judiciary Committee. Five state senators also added on as co-authors. This is the first time any group of state employees would have a paid holiday to honor California Native Americans. The bill passed 10-0 on a bipartisan vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Thank you all the supporters! See more

In June I learned from colleagues that the City of Santa Barbara had a street named Indio Muerto (Dead Indian) and sent a letter to the City Council signed by o...ther members and myself -- including the local legislators. In October, I testified before the City Council for the name change chosen by a committee of Chumash representatives and a neighborhood committee. The Council voted unanimously for the name change and now it is official! Many thanks to Marcus Lopez and Mayor Cathy Murillo and the city committee for making the name change a reality. The street no longer has that offensive and despicable name. In a virtual but emotional ceremony, the name change took effect today. I am so proud to have helped make this change happen. See more
