Published in the Marin IJ March 20, 2012.......In an unrelated case, a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision in San Rafael has resulted in a $2.3 million settlement for the pedestrian, according to court documents. Maria CoutinhoLeal suffered head and leg injuries after she was hit by an Amici's Pizza delivery car on Nov. 30, 2010, police said. Coutinholeal, then 56, was struck in the crosswalk at Mission Avenue and Nye Street, which has no traffic signals. The driver of the ca...r, identified as 19-year-old Andre Checarelly of Hercules, was cited for failing to stop, police said. Arthur Pirelli, one of Coutinholeal's lawyers at Critchlow Diskint Rhine and Pirelli in San Rafael, said she fell into a coma initially, but is "recovering well" after two months in the hospital and extensive rehabilitation. The settlement, reached in October, includes payments of $1.95 million from the pizza company's insurer; $300,000 from the insurer for the driver's contractor, Safe Delivery Services; and $50,000 from the driver's insurer.
