Did you know that Yaupon is an evergreen holly and distant relative of Yerba Maté. Yaupon traditionally has been used to brew a caffeinated beverage used for ceremonial and social practices by various Native American peoples of the Southeastern United States. While it's sometimes used as a landscape plant, it's important cultural history is not well known outside of its indigenous habitat. We could not be more thrilled to see local and state leaders come together to learn more about urban agriculture by visiting us at the West Sacramento Urban Farm Program! Today Assemblymember Robert Rivas, Chair of the Assembly Agriculture, Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, 7th District, West Sac Mayor Christopher Cabaldon, West Sac City Manager Aaron Laurel, and their respective staff members toured our original farm at 5th and C St currently operated by Three Sisters Gardens of Broderick and our old site located behind Yolo High school now Fiery Ginger Farm to hear the success and challenges faced by urban farmers. Cheers to that!

Did you know that Riverfront Farm is supplying a whole lotta fresh produce to Drake's: The Barn! If you're craving something fresh, local, and mouth-wateringly delicious, stop by Drakes and order the Farm Pizza! We literally walk the fresh veggies over from the field!

Today the West Sacramento Urban Farm Program brought over 200 lbs of fresh organic produce grown just two miles away at Riverfront Farm to help sustain our friends at a local affordable housing complex. After that we completed our final week of the Care Beyond Our Walls Program with Kaiser Permanente! That was 450 bags of fresh produce, plant starts and resources out to local residents. To tie it all up we finished another round of thank you boxes for partners! Huge shout out to Health Education Council, Kaiser Permanente, West Sac Housing Development Corp, Heartyfork Farm, Fiery Ginger Farm, Six o’clock Farm, our precious volunteers and all the residents inspiring us to do better everyday!

Today’s free produce distribution from Riverfront Farm to our friends at a local affordable housing complex included: acorn squash, summer squash, melons, hot peppers, sweet peppers, tomatoes, green tomatoes, eggplant and carrots! Food is a right not a privilege !

West Sac Urban Farm is gettin it done! Woke up and harvested Summer Squash for CommuniCare’s diabetes cooking class, went straight on over to load and drop off produce for distribution at one of our affordable housing complexes, straight from there to aggregate 75 more bags with Kaiser for the Care Beyond our Walls project and then assembled THANK YOU boxes full of Riverfront Farm produce for our partners! A huge shout out to Eman, the incredible volunteer provided by the Health Education Council, for taking the lead on our free produce distribution today!!! Stronger Together!
