ATTN #WUSDK12 middle and high school families, Sacramento City College (Official) seeks feedback from middle and high school students in our region as we develop a VR (Virtual Reality) experience for our Makerspace. The Sacramento City College Makerspace is a dynamic, interdisciplinary hub for learning and making. With access to state-of-the-art digital tools and many diverse training opportunities, we’re a unique and inclusive learning environment, open to all. Students deve...lop critical thinking and practical problem-solving skills, along with soft skills and team building, via hands-on learning processes as they explore creativity, technology, and making. Currently, SCC is building a fun and informative VR (Virtual Reality) experience to give our future students an engaging way to see what we have to offer at SCC and the many academic and career pathways available to them at our college. Most important to this project’s success is surveying students in our region, ideally grades 7-12, on their current level of technology and VR experience with this short, anonymous survey; to better assist with project development. SCC is hoping to deploy an accessible, fun, VR app for middle and high school students in Spring 2021. As we continue to navigate the challenges of an unprecedented school year impacted heavily by COVID-19, our challenges are compounded by the polarizing disparities in our culture and the events that unfolded this week in Washington D.C. More than ever, it is imperative to remember that we are one school district and one community. We stand in unity to help our community heal from the activities taking place across the country and from COVID-19. We understand this is a very st...ressful and uncertain time for all of us, especially children. Families and employees can play an essential role in helping children make sense of what they hear in an honest, accurate manner and minimize anxiety or fear. As we reflect on the world around us, various topics are sure to surface at home and even in our virtual learning classrooms. Our commitment is to continue strengthening the culture of our schools with the ideals of equity, diversity, and inclusion while providing a safe, secure, and welcoming learning and working environment, whether on campus or through virtual learning. As the new year kicks off, the WUSD Technology Team is partnering with each of our schools to exchange 4,600 Chromebooks district-wide with all new devices for students in grades 3 to 10 throughout January. Procedures and exchange dates vary from school to school, so make sure to look out for announcements from your school principal (phone calls, email, website, and social media posts) with your school-specific instructions. All Chromebook exchange locations are designed as ...drive-thru style check-out systems to comply with COVID-19 public health guidelines. To receive a new Chromebook, you MUST bring your old Chromebook to exchange. For more information or questions, please contact your teacher and site administrator via telephone, email, or leave a message with your school’s main office, and we will provide assistance as soon as possible. The Washington Unified School District (WUSD) is proud to join more than 1,000 local educational agencies in the state in recognizing the contributions of board members during School Board Recognition Month. In this time of unprecedented challenges in nearly every sector of life, board members have worked tirelessly to help our district establish new ways of ensuring students continue to learn. The WUSD Board of Trustees are our elected representatives and a vital link betwee...n the school district and the community. The board sets the foundation and vision for the district, directs resources where they are most needed, and ensures accountability to the community by monitoring progress toward goals to best support and elevate student achievement. During this challenging year, the WUSD Board of Trustees has worked to close the digital divide, bring all instruction online, provide food services for children even when they are not in school, and strengthen social-emotional supports to students, families, and staff. Please join us in recognizing our hard-working board members for their support of our students through effective policies and for their continuing advocacy for more resources at the state level. Following the State, County, and CDC guidelines, we have brought students on campus for assessments and have opened Learning Centers and day care since the beginning of school. Students with the most severe needs and disabilities in our Special Day Classes (SDC) remain to be our focus in returning our first group of students back to school for instruction. The negotiating teams for the Washington Unified School District (WUSD) and the West Sacramento Teachers Association (WST...A) continue to negotiate the safe return of small cohorts of Special Day Class (SDC) students to school sites. As an update, both parties met on the following dates: September 9, 2020 - Both parties met to check in since the return to school. October 5, 2020 - Discussion about the return of SDC students. October 15, 2020 - Continued discussion. October 20, 2020 - Continued discussion. October 21, 2020 - Continued discussion. October 27, 2020 - WSTA provided a proposal to WUSD. October 28, 2020 - WUSD provided a response proposal to WSTA. November 2, 2020 - WSTA provided a response to the proposal to WUSD. November 3, 2020 - WUSD provided a response to the proposal to WSTA. The discussions have been focused on safely returning designated staff to attend training sessions, meetings and prepare their classroom/work locations for the return of SDC students later this month. The plan includes a two-week transition period commencing on November 2, 2020, with a week of orientation for students with their teachers the week of November 16, 2020. Following the Thanksgiving break, only SDC families and students that have elected to return to an in-person hybrid model will return to school the week of November 30, 2020. Families with students in our SDC classes affected by these changes have been notified of the schedule to return small cohorts of in-person hybrid instruction as well as the option for the virtual learning model. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 metrics for Yolo County, West Sacramento, and WUSD. Both parties are scheduled to meet next Tuesday, November 10, 2020. It is the hope of WUSD to reach an agreement with WSTA next week. We want to thank both the WSTA and WUSD bargaining teams for their continued efforts and hard work throughout this entire process. Thank you for your support and understanding. We will continue to update our families and staff throughout our progress.

One of the biggest topics throughout virtual learning is technology. During last night's Board Meeting, staff presented a technology update highlighting the latest progress we have made to strengthen district-wide technology infrastructure and support for students, staff, and families. This includes the purchase of new Chromebooks to phase out old or damaged devices. Although demand is making availability very difficult these days, our superstar Technology Team has been work...ing extremely hard to ensure our families do not miss out. This afternoon, we received an initial batch of 156 new Chromebooks that will soon make their way into the hands of students. To date, we have check out 5,224 Chromebooks and 453 hotspots to students throughout the WUSD. Please contact your school principal for support if you know anyone who is still in need of assistance with technology or internet access. Thank you, WUSDk12 Technology Department! We appreciate all that you do for our families and staff! #Great2bWUSD
