As we observe World Mental Health Day, we recognize the importance of the arts to provide a pathway to well-being through self expression. VSA Orange County believes that everyone should have the access, opportunity and freedom to express themselves through the arts. We applaud our friends at Well Beings Studio for supporting emotional well being and open communication through the arts in the free arts experiences they offer for children and families. Visit their website at http://wellbeings.studio/ to find out more about how the arts can support your overall well-being, especially during these challenging times.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our traveling show, "Arts on the Move"! This visual arts show, which features select pieces form the 2020 VSA Festival, will be showcased, virtually, throughout the month of October by community partners who are helping us to shine a light on artists with disabilities for Disability Awareness Month. Our first stop is Bower's Museum. Visit our traveling show in the Bowers at Home section under "kids": https://www.bowers.org/index.php/...visit/at-home#kids Bowers Museum strives to make their facility as accessible as possible via facility features such as ramps and accessible seating in their auditorium. The museum also offers audio tours, virtual tours, and virtual guides to exhibitions to increase accessibility for those with vision, hearing or mobility-related disabilities. For more information about Bowers Museum and their current exhibitions visit www.bowers.org

Today we celebrate World Sight Day, an annual global event to bring awareness to blindness and vision impairment. VSA Orange County celebrates blind and visually impaired artists and the amazing contributions they make to the world. We'd also like to recognize Josephine Hernandez, a visually impaired artist, who created the new logo for VSA Orange County's traveling arts show, "Arts on the Move." The logo incorporates a wispy colorful sketch of a person in a wheel chair holdi...ng a paint brush above their head with colorful brush strokes of red, yellow and green around them. This graphic represents the "O" of the word "move," which is displayed in a brush stroke font in blue. Thank you, Joey for creating such a wonderful visual representation of what Arts on the Move is all about! About the Artist: Born and raised in Southern California, Josephine "Joey" Hernandez is passionate about art, inclusivity, and disability pride. Her work has been featured in several local and international shows. Joey began losing her vision to a juvenile form of macular degeneration during her sophomore year of high school. Over the course of a couple of months, Joey went from average sight to partial blindness. Her vision is blurry and she constantly sees moving neon lights. Joey primarily creates pencil drawings and acrylic paintings on large canvases and sketchpads, but she has also dabbled in digital art. Joey is a senior at California State University, Fullerton double-majoring in Communications and American Studies. When she isn't painting, studying, or working Joey enjoys skateboarding with the help of her long white cane. #WorldSightDay #artsanddisability #blindness #visuallyimpaired #disabilityawareness
