Medication Safety for Seniors Over-medication and combining the wrong medications are two serious problems that occur often with seniors. Here are five practical solutions to this issue: 1. Brown Bag Visits: Have an annual doctor's visit to review all of your loved one's medications, including prescription and over-the-counter.... 2. Doctor Review: Gently remind the physician that not every side effect is due to old age, some may be a result of over-medication or the interaction of certain medications. 3. Research the Medications: Most medical research is preformed on adults under the age of 65. Seek out studies related to medications that have been focused on the over 65 age group. 4. "Main Brain": Use one central person as the gate-keeper for the review of all medications. Less confusion, less conflict. 5. Natural Medications: We live in a Westernized medical culture, yet more and more physicians are beginning to see the value of Eastern medicine. Look to see if any "natural" remedies are available. Simplicity is key. Keep medications simple and routines easy to follow. Make sure written instructions are readable and verbal instruction is easy to remember.
