Spending time with horses can improve your health! Horses can give us emotional solance and physical support, allowing people to tare away from worries, stress, and personal problems we face in our daily lives. Nationally, health risks associated with stress have sky-rocketed in the past few years. Anxiety, depression, high-blood pressure and heart attacks are on the rise and society usually resolves these issues through doses of medication. A horse barn may be a cheap...er and less damaging solution. Riding horses have been medically linked to improving both mental and physical health. Along with the emotional connection people can share with horses, exercise and fresh air benefit those who choose to ride and care for them. Many special needs children, such as autistic children benefit from working with horses and are thought to be able to communicate more efficiently with animals than humans. Other studies have shown soldiers post-war suffering with PTSD that have shown great success when exposed to horses. Horse riding and training courses have even been implemented into prisons and have been reported to create better-adjusted prisoners than prisoners who don’t have access to similar programs. Exercise improves blood flow, heart rate and most bodily functions. Many stables offer horse back riding lessons for beginners which helps strengthen core muscles, posture and balance. People with physical disabilities can benefit from riding as a low-impact sport that is softer on their bodies and provides an enjoyable alternative to the gym.

A 2010 study published in the journal Rejuvenation Research, for instance, found a combination of blueberry, green tea and carnosine have neuritogenic (i.e. promoting neuronal regeneration) and stem-cell regenerative effects in an animal model of neurodegenerative disease.[1] Other researched neuritogenic substances include: Curcumin Lion's Mane Mushroom Apigenin... This is what I've sent my patients, friends, and family regarding the newest facts concerning coronavirus. Everyday things seem to have escalated quickly regard...ing covid-19. Here are some suggestions and updates. It is also imperative to remain calm. It is best to be prepared. This is going to be a journey, and it's best to calmly prepare. This is an opportunity to focus on self-care practices and prioritize your health. Constantly checking the news and Facebook is definitely feeding into the panic mentality. Please be mindful of your practices and check in to see if they are contributing to a healthy or negative response to this new paradigm that is now a daily reality for us. I believe it is IMPERATIVE to be proactive in this situation. Nutrition and lifestyle have a huge impact on how our body functions. Common Covid-19 Symptoms: Fever AND a cough or shortness of breath Please note that some new evidence is showing that there can be a gastro-intestinal component to this as well. (diarrhea, stomach pain, etc). If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath Persistent pain or pressure in the chest New confusion or inability to arouse Bluish lips or face Most hospitals will not test you unless you have the common symptoms. Testing is quite limited right now and they are reserving it for the more severe cases, not for people that have been exposed. Most standard of care if you have been exposed or have mild symptoms is to self-quarantine for 14 days. The CDC's website has ample information https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html Chinese Formulas: As a Chinese Medicine trained herbalist, there are two main formulas that have been used to support the system. If you are interested in having them on hand, please reply back to this email, and I can give you more information. Lifestyle Recommendations: STAY HOME AND SELF-QUARANTINE. Doing this will help you from unknowingly spreading this. People can carry the virus and spread it without having any symptoms. This is why it is crucial to minimize all unnecessary outings. Avoid or reduce chronic stress and stressful situations; relax more as stress can contribute to a weakened immune system. If you do not already practice meditation, this is a good time to start. Joe Dispenza is one of my favorites. If you want guided meditations, I suggest the apps Insight Timer, Calm or relaxing music on Spotify. There is also Gaia - for inspirational streaming movies. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This cannot be stressed enough. This is the best time to remove refined sugars out of your diet. If you can tolerate it, manuka honey is the best option. Avoid becoming sleep-deprived or exhausted, which can further compromise the immune system. Most adults need 8-9 hours on average per night of good quality sleep. I'm a big fan of tracking my sleep. Stay well-hydrated. Avoid alcohol which can weaken the immune system. Find a specific exercise program you enjoy to support stress response and immune modulation. Walking outside is a good option. The sunshine and fresh air are natural immune system enhancers. Many studios are now streaming yoga. Practice meditation and compassion - this alone can raise the immune system for 6 hours. This article by Dr. Mario Martinez is very informative on psychoneuroimmunology. Acupuncture is a great way to boost the immune system. (I've amended this even since Friday, stay home and away from doctor's offices unless necessary). Dietary Tips: Eat foods that are high in lysine such as apples, apricots, avocados, beets, figs, mangoes, tomatoes and papaya. Eat foods that are high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids such as organic fresh fruits (oranges, papayas, strawberries, blueberries), organic leafy green vegetables (spinach, bok choy, lettuce, kale), and cruciferous vegetables; include bell peppers and rosehip tea. Eat foods that are high in zinc such as seafood, pumpkin seed, sea vegetables, and beans, lentils and legumes (if there is no food sensitivity). Avoid meat and chicken with added hormones and antibiotics that disrupt the microbiome. Choose organic, antibiotic and hormone-free whenever possible. Avoid cashews and chocolate which contain high amounts of the amino acid arginine which depletes the anti-viral nutrient lysine. Avoid refined sugars and artificial sweeteners; opt for natural sweeteners like stevia or monkfruit. Reduce sources of caffeine and high sugar drinks like soda and fruit juices; also reduce alcohol; strive to drink adequate amounts of purified water. Avoid refined, white flour products (and gluten for that matter). Stick to whole grains such as quinoa. Consume adequate amounts of antioxidants which can be obtained daily through 5-9 servings of vegetables/fruit. If unable to eat the recommended servings of vegetables/fruit, add 1-2 tablespoons of PaleoGreens and PaleoReds in purified water daily. Make sure to balance blood sugar by eating healthy fats (nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut) and optimal proteins as needed throughout the day.
