Behind the Scenes: Quality Collections Management Care Practices The most common response that I get after I tell someone that I am the History Curator for the ...San Bernardino County Museum is Wow, that’s so interesting! So.what does a curator do? I actually love it when I get this response because it is always a pleasure to share what I do and what my fellow curators do on a daily basis, and it is fun to see and hear people’s reactions. A curator wears many hats, but our primary responsibility is to manage, preserve, and share information about the collections that we oversee. As the History Curator, I oversee the historical objects in our collection, which are made up of a wide array of different items. Objects in our history collections range from as big as the train in our museum courtyard or the cars in our Hall of History. .to objects as small as a thimble or a button. I also have the privilege to manage our art collection and our archival collections, which include photographs, newspapers, journals, daguerreotypes, scrapbooks, and many other priceless treasures. Additionally, I oversee and care for our museum’s historic sites, which are in different cities throughout the county, and I manage the collections housed in those locations as well. One of my primary goals as a history curator is to ensure that we care for and preserve the objects within our history collections so that we can retain the object and its historical importance in order to share this with museum visitors and researchers. These objects and the stories tied to them help us tell our region’s history, which is why it is so important that we have these items and that we care for them. These artifacts tell us where we came from and what life was like decades ago. Caring for these objects, particularly as an accredited museum by the American Alliance of Museums, involves many different steps and procedures such as cataloging new donations, digitizing objects, pest management, prepping objects to go on display, taking condition reports, meticulously and delicately cleaning items, as well as a slew of other things. Museum collections work is boundless, there is always something to do, which is what makes my job so fun and exciting there is never a dull moment! Over time, all objects start to degrade, so it is our job as museum collections staff to slow this degradation as much as possible and protect these items. Preserving objects involves monitoring every aspect of the object’s storage locationfrom the shelf unit it is on, to the box it is in, to the temperature and humidity in the room that it is located. In order to preserve our historical objects as best as we can, we start by using acid-free boxes, tissue paper, and any other packing materials so that they do not include large amounts of bleach, dyes, or other harmful contaminants that could affect the objects and quicken their degradation. We also use metal shelving to limit chemical off-gassing, which is particularly prevalent in shelving that contains things like wood or particle board. Chemical off-gassing affects most historical objects and actually makes them degrade faster. We also have temperature and humidity data loggers throughout all of our storage and exhibit areas so that we can monitor the environment within those spaces. Collection objects have a temperature and humidity range that is optimum for their preservation and longevity, so the data loggers help us inform our facility maintenance staff to make any necessary changes. Additionally, the objects themselves are labeled with museum collections quality labeling material or tags. That way, an object is identifiable and its information can be linked by its accession number (or identification number) to its files and its information in our database. Lastly, we also label our shelving and boxes so that objects have a permanent location that is recorded on our database and within the object’s record to make these objects searchable and easy to find. We use our collections objects in our exhibits and which objects we use at any given time depends on the theme of the exhibit or the story we are trying to tell. Whenever an object goes on display, curatorial staff preps their items, which includes pulling the object from its permanent location, cleaning the object if necessary, noting the object’s condition before, during, and after being on exhibit, using appropriate display materials to exhibit the items, and updating the object’s current location on our database. While on display, museum staff limits damage/deterioration of an object by minimizing light exposure, securing the object behind railings or within a plexiglass display case, and monitoring temperature and humidity within that exhibit space. By securing the object, we can share it with our museum visitors and help tell the fascinating story of our region. Our museum’s collections hold countless stories about our county and I have the privilege of working with these objects on a daily basis. It is so fulfilling to be able to care for these objects and to share them with museum visitors, researchers, and those who follow us on social media. I hope this gives you a glimpse into what museum curators do and the many steps it takes to care for and preserve these wonderful artifacts. I hope that you also got a sneak peek of some of the many treasures that your local museum houses.
