A Longstanding Practice - GCID has a longstanding practice to conduct dredging and gravel removal operations to keep the GCID intake channel, that is used to di...vert water from the Sacramento River to the District’s main pump station, clear of sediment and gravel blockages. From the 1880s to 2020 dredging and gravel removal for GCID and its predecessors has been essential to ensure reliable water diversions to meet agricultural and environmental water service needs. The Fish Guidance Structure Spring-run Chinook Salmon enter the Sacramento River from late March through September. Adults hold in cool water habitats, then sp...awn in the fall. Winter-run Chinook Salmon spawn in the upper Sacramento River from April through August. Fry and smolts migrate downstream from July through March. The winter-run Chinook are listed as endangered and the spring-run are listed as a threatened species. One of the permits obtained to perform the Intake Channel Gravel Removal Project required GCID to install a Fish Guidance Structure (FGS) to provide protection for fish listed by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The FGS acted as a deterrent to keep fish away from the construction activities in the intake channel. It was installed by GCID personnel during the last week of February, prior to starting the project. CDFW performed several mark and recapture fish releases before and after the FGS was in place. Small salmon from Coleman Fish Hatchery were marked with paint and then released in different locations above and near the intake channel. Their marked fish were recaptured south of the fish screens and were recorded for a study to determine efficacy of the FGS. The Fish Guidance Structure was removed once the intake channel gravel removal project was completed. https://www.facebook.com/Worthington-Products-Inc-104308032970437/

Chrome #20. A few days ago, images of the chrome concentrate being loaded into railroad cars at Fruto were shown with some descriptive information. Joe, asked t...he question if the OHCS had any information about the "roundhouse" at Fruto. The answer to this query comes from Tom Haskill in the fall 2002 issue of Wagon Wheels, journal of the Colusi (co-loo-see) County Historical Society. In his research of Fruto history, Tom could not secure a copy of the Fruto Town Plat (1888) from either Colusa or Glenn County Clerk Recorders. Thus, Tom drew a replica of the plat and it is included with Tom's story. On looking at Tom's map, you will note that "the railroad owned the block wide area between Vine and Cherry Streets with private development occurred only on the south side of Vine and the north side of Cherry." On their property, "the block wide-strip between Vine and Cherry, the RR laid track and sidings. It built a depot with living facilities for the station agent, offices and a freight storage area. The Company erected a water tank atop a tower. It constructed a roundhouse, warehouse for grain and hay, corrals and loading platforms for cattle, sheep and hogs. It planted palm trees and even made a small 'park' beside the depot." For 30 years or more, Fruto had "daily train service from the Willows and outside world." The passenger train and crew stayed in Fruto--making a trip to Willows in the morning and returned in the afternoon. The freight train and crew stayed in Willows and made a trip to Fruto in the morning and returned to Willows in the afternoon. Stops could be made at sidings along the way. Tom's plat indicates "turntable" which would make more sense that construction of a "roundhouse." An image of the abandoned roadbed east of Fruto along State Route 162 is also shown. This ends the series of posts on "Chrome." Thanks to Phil for asking about Chrome and this interesting topic from our area's past. "Proud History, Bright Future." See more
