The animal rights association, Uncaged created International Animal Rights Day in 1998. It was their goal to highlight all forms of violence against animals. Founders of the day stated that since animals can’t vote, protest, or lobby for their own protection, humans have to do it for them. Uncaged has its headquarters in Sheffield, England. They specifically chose December 10th for International Animal Rights Day as it coincides with Human Rights Day. It’s their desire to extend these same inalienable rights to all living creatures, even if they are a different species than humans.

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the re-dedication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah (Hebrew: , usually spelled pronounced [anuka] in Modern Hebrew, also romanized as Chanukah or Chanuka), is observed for eight nights and days. It starts on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at ...any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. Did you know these facts? Hanukkah is not considered a significant religious holiday when compared to other Jewish holidays. The menorah holds nine candles. In the center stands the shamus or servant. The shamus lights the 8 other Hanukkah candles. The Hanukkah candles are strictly for pleasure. They are not to be utilized for any useful or productive purpose. The shamus is available, so the Hanukkah candles aren’t accidentally used to light a fire in the fireplace or another useful purpose. Gift giving is not traditionally a part of the Hanukkah holiday. Playing dreidel is a gambling game popular during the Hanukkah holiday. Fried foods are traditional during the holiday, representing the oil used to light the lamps Learn more about Chanukah. Share your Chanukah traditions with us!

Originally called spun sugar, cotton candy is still a staple at carnivals, fairs, and the circus. While it may be reminiscent of childhood days, fairy floss also reminds us of fluffy clouds. Since the heated sugar gets spun into thin strands of fine sugar and blown into fat puffs twirled onto paper sticks, it’s a bit like magic. We associate it with other magical occasions, too. Carnivals and fairs, the zoo, and the circus delight us. We associate a bit a joy and magic with ...cotton candy. Nostalgic memories of bustling crowds and the music of the calliope bring a smile to our faces. Cotton candy comes with adventure! Did you know cotton candy is also called candy floss or fairy floss? Send us a photo of you enjoying your delicious cotton candy today!

National Sock Day on December 4 recognizes the rarest of all lasting unities, the marriage of matched socks. When they manage to find each other, wash after wash, dry after to dry, it’s time to celebrate! In an effort to promote lasting sock matches, the observance dedicated the day to all pairs, even the tiny baby socks who manage to stay paired. We don’t know if it’s animal magnetism (static cling) or chemistry (something in the detergent), these sock pairs deserve recognit...ion! The day honors all matches made in laundromantic-matrimony. No color, style or size will be turned away. Argyle to tube socks, knee highs, and fuzzy slipper socks if they keep finding their mate over and over, this National Day wiggles its toes in their honor! Do your socks match? Share your rare pairs of socks with us!

National Mutt Day encourages us to embrace, save and celebrate mixed breed dogs twice a year on July 31st and December 2nd. Desperately longing for a new home, millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs in shelters wait for someone to come and adopt them. National Mutt Day provides an excellent opportunity to find the perfect canine companion. Despite the name, a mutt learns, obeys and trains much like purebred animals. While their lineage cannot be traced and their features a bit murky, their companionship will be faithful. Post a story and picture of your favorite mutt on the comments below.

We know you’re so excited to go on some autumn nature walks with your dog, but for this #FallSafetyTip, make sure you watch out for snakes, some of which can be venomous! They’re preparing for hibernation and may be a little crankier if disturbed by a curious pet! When walking or hiking, if something happens to your pet, be sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. #VCApets
