It’s not about celebrating disabilities, it’s about celebrating abilities. - NDSS Goodwill Ambassador, Chris Burke October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a c...hance to spread awareness. During the month of October, we celebrate people with Down syndrome and make people aware of our abilities and accomplishments. It’s not about celebrating disabilities, it’s about celebrating abilities. Down Syndrome Awareness Month was started by the National Down Syndrome Society in the 1980’s. By spreading awareness, advocacy, and inclusion throughout the community, the month is a time to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome and make people aware of their abilities and accomplishments. Down syndrome occurs across the human spectrum and is the most common chromosomal condition. Each year, about 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome a 1 in 700 chance. The prevalence of Down syndrome increases with the mother’s age. It is associated with delays in physical growth, characteristic facial features and intellectual disability. In fact, the average IQ of an adult with Down syndrome is equivalent to that of an 8-year-old. These are just facts, and like all facts, they can fail to provide a full picture. The truth is that children born with Down syndrome can absolutely go on to live happy and long lives. And with Down Syndrome Awareness Month every October, we can be inspired to learn more about this topic and to celebrate people born with Down syndrome and the medical advancements that increasingly improve their quality of life. ****information from upwithdowns.org & nationaltoday.com.

Hi folks - I am doing a fundraiser in honor of Breast Cancer awareness month. I have a target to sell 110 of these beautiful warmers in 10 days so a little over $1,000 is donated to research to find a cure. Please share this post and get everyone on your friends list involved. Help find a cure.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Father Jay Matthews. Father Jay was a vital part of the Oakland metropolitan community, well-known and loved b...y all. Ordained as the first African American Catholic priest in Northern California, he served as pastor of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church for 26 years, and as chaplain of the Oakland Police and Fire Departments before moving on to his most current post as Rector of the Cathedral of Christ the Light. Father Jay's life was one of service and wisdom, and his ability to connect with others was legend. Without a doubt, Father Jay made our community a better place, and his positive impact will be felt for years to come. Please join me in keeping Father Jay, his family, and his community in your prayers. For all those who would like to pay their respects, funeral services will take place on Sunday with a viewing at 4 P.M. and a vigil at 6 P.M. at Christ the Light Cathedral in Oakland, followed by reception.

This year's Healthy Living Festival was amazing! The USOAC hosted seniors from all over Alameda county for a day of fun and vital info on living our best lives. We enjoyed tai chi, Zumba and line dancing, plus access to the entire zoo. The Bay Area Blues Society and crooner Keith Barros provided music for those who just wanted to chill. There was even a healthy lunch--all at no cost! Thanks, Nate Miley <3
