OCT 29: Building Justice from the Source: Traditional Artists Respond this Moment. Join us for part 2 of this online panel series focusing on Race and (In)Justi...ce. This national panel moderated by Heather L. Hodges (Executive Director, Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor) brings together a group of emerging, African American traditional artists and scholars from across the nation: Jake Blunt, Sara Makeba Daise, Marquise Knox and Latanya d. Tigner. They are all deeply rooted in traditional culture and drawing on that powerful wellspring to offer important, contemporary social critiques of race, racial injustice and notions of self-identity. Their work encourages us to shape new narratives around contemporary, cultural identities rooted in traditional ways of knowing, living and making art yet keenly responsive to our current moment. This Indigenous Peoples' Day, and every day, we seek to honor and acknowledge the stewardship of the Native peoples of these lands. We offer gratitude for their past, present, and future leadership. Looking to learn more? Our colleagues at the CA Native American Heritage Commission created a new digital atlas, focusing on the history and cultural heritage of Native Americans in California and illustrating the impacts of colonization: http://nahc.ca.gov/cp/ Another tool to help start your acknowledgment of ancestral lands is the #HonorNativeLand Guide: www.usdac.us/nativeland. Acknowledgment is one way of showing respect and a step toward correcting the stories and practices that erase Indigenous people’s history and culture and toward inviting and honoring the truth.
