"We have to be visible. We should not be ashamed of who we are." - Sylvia Rivera Silvia Rivera was a "tireless advocate for those silenced and disregarded by larger movements. Throughout her life, she fought against the exclusion of transgender people, especially transgender people of color, from the larger movement for gay rights. Along with Marsha P. Johnson, Rivera started the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) around 1971. The group became a space to organ...ize and discuss issues facing the transgender community in New York City." Source: womenshistory.org

"I didn’t realize how big the need was for so many people to just get it out, to have someone look them in the eye and say, ‘I believe you.’ I cried a lot. I Skyped a lot with my life coach, because the horrors that I was taking in triggered my PTSD" - Gabrielle Union

Trigger warning: sexual assault, sexual violence. "A Sergeant Major and combat medic in the United States Army, Aaron has done three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and another mission in war-ravaged Bosnia. Yet he will tell you that none of those experiences affected him as much as the trauma he suffered at age 15, at the hands of a high school teacher who methodically groomed him and then raped him. And Aaron will also tell you that he chooses the word rape deliberately be...cause it conveys the reality of what was done to him. Days after the rape, the teacher sent Aaron a letter, apologizing for an unnamed transgression. Aaron threw the letter into the trash. His mother found the letter and questioned Aaron about what had happened, but he denied that anything inappropriate had happened. Like virtually all abused children, he internalized the shame." Learn more about Aaron Stones' story on 1in6.org or through his TedX talk on YouTube. If you need support from an Advocate, please email [email protected] or call (949) 824-7273

Throughout the summer, CARE will continue to provide different journal prompts as one of the online resources for those who find healing through writing. Today's prompt encourages community members to write a love letter to themselves.

Community, Spirituality, and Ritual for Surviving and Thriving with Ignacio Rivera tomorrow at 4:00 PST This is a survivors-only event. When thinking of self-care, we often picture ourselves doing it alone. We aim to understand ourselves enough to know what is "right" and what is "wrong" for our well-being. The truth is, sometimes we just can't. Finding the tools, holding ourselves accountable, and thinking outside the box can be challenging. Asking for support from our com...munity is sometimes the most loving act of self-care. This program engages participants by discussing harm reduction approaches and sharing self-care skills that we can incorporate in our communities, families, and everyday life to balance ourselves on a daily basis. Register by: bit.ly/careignacio Questions or concerns can be directed to CARE Assistant Director, Eli Pascal at [email protected] #uci #uciCARE

Join Human Options and Dr. Nadine Burke Harris in an important discussion on the impact of childhood trauma. What is the impact of childhood trauma? Childhood trauma may shorten a life by almost 20 years. Trauma from growing up with household dysfunction or emotional, physical, or sexual abuse significantly increases the likelihood of chronic health conditions in adulthood like diabetes, heart disease, depression, and substance abuse. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris is an award-winni...ng physician, researcher, and advocate dedicated to changing the way our society responds to one of the most serious, expensive, and widespread public health crises of our time: childhood trauma. She was appointed as California’s first-ever Surgeon General by Governor Gavin Newsom in January 2019. To learn more about Human Options: https://humanoptions.org/
