In celebration of Carol Dolcini’s retirement after 30+ years of service to our undergraduates, the Department of French has renamed its Study Abroad Flight Fund the Carol Dolcini Study Abroad Flight Fund. If you are able, please consider making a contribution and help our undergraduates find their wings. Allez les ours! https://give.berkeley.edu/fund/FN7207000.

Now out from Bloomsbury Press! Examining how photography plays in Proust’s monumental (unfinished) novel changes our understanding of how time is at work in it. Challenging the traditional story about Proust's masterpiece we bring it back to earth, revealing Proust's attention to French popular culture and his vigorous engagement with time as it happensa time of life we examine with the help of three philosophers who were Proust’s contemporaries.

As a semester more chaotic than most closes, the French Department remembers that in an extended moment of social distancing, we are, and always will be, a community connected by two left turns connecting three hallways on Level D Dwinelle. Although we cannot be together, the closing of each academic year reminds us that students come to us so that we might we prepare them to go. It is with no less a bittersweet sentiment that we send off our Spring 2020 graduates, whose feet may no longer tread our hallways, but whose echoes will surely still sound there when we return. We wish them all the best and ask them to always remember that they have formed us as much as we hope to have formed them. Courage, les jeunes! Le monde est à vous!
