What’s more important, sleep or exercise? The answer is wonderfully simple: both! You absolutely should be getting enough sleep to be healthy and should be exercising at least mildly. As Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Edward Laskowski puts it: "I couldn't choose between the two Sleep and exercise are like food and water." The more nuanced answer is that it depends on who you are. If you’re somebody who gets plenty of sleep but no exercise, a workout will be more important. If you’re some...body who exercises plenty but doesn’t sleep much, sleep is clearly the answer. We’ve discussed before that there are indeed significant mental health benefits gleaned from exercise, but this article goes into detail about how and why exactly that happens. One of the most interesting statements is that exercise increases neurogenesis the creation of new neurons in the hippocampus.
