Last month in Colorado, a crew was working along a roadway when a fully loaded semi-truck impacted a parked Street Smart Rental TMA truck with a Scorpion Truck Mounted Attenuator. The 75,000 lb. impacting semi-truck was traveling at least 65 MPH when it impacted the Scorpion. The Scorpion successfully took the brunt of the impact by absorbing the energy from the crash and protected the entire work crew, allowing everyone to walk away from the crash unharmed.

Take a look at the damage that an 80,000 lb. semi truck can do. This impact occurred on a stretch of I-25 in Denver, Colorado back in 2016. The semi likely hit the Scorpion TMA around 65 mph, crushing the attenuator completely and protecting both the driver and construction workers on the scene. These attenuators are designed to get hit, said Colorado State Patrol trooper Nate Reid. Our Scorpions are easily replaceable after a hit lives are not.

Nearly four years ago, in December of 2016, a Dallas roadwork crew was setting up lane closures for the night's work ahead. Two workers were on the back of the work truck, placing drums along the highway when the distracted driver of a tow truck barreled into the Crash truck with Scorpion TMA at 80-85 miles an hour. The workers on the back of the truck were able to jump off before the impact, and the Scorpion stopped the tow truck from entering the work zone further and protected the workers on the job. The driver of the TMA truck was shaken, but all parties involved were able to walk away with no injuries.

When we say our Scorpion TMAs save lives all around the world, we mean it. This crash from July 2015 was in Quatar, when the driver of a compact KIA failed to slow down in a construction zone and slammed into a Scorpion TMA. Thanks to the Scorpion, both the driver and all workers were able to be with their families that night. Without the life saving performance of the Scorpion, crashes like this might have a very different outcome.

Four years ago in May of 2016, a construction crew was painting lines on a busy, divided highway in Fredericton, NB Canada. The driver of a passing tractor trailer wasn’t paying attention and struck the crew’s supply truck with one of our Scorpion Towable Attenuators attached at likely over 50+ MPH. The Scorpion performed perfectly and took the brunt of the damage, protecting the work crew and the supply truck driver from any major injuries. John Carter from AA Towing who responded to the incident stated, we have been in the towing business for 30 plus years and haven’t seen anything like that before. Another team from Precision Sign & Traffic that also responded to the incident noted, there was white paint everywhere, it was quite the mess! But thankful nobody was seriously injured or killed thanks to this product!

Another incredible testament to the life-saving power of our Scorpion TMAs, all the way from Sweden! This accident happened last week on European route E6, the main thoroughfare through Norway and the west coast of Sweden. The driver was operating a Mercedes Sprinter van (3.5 tons) set on cruise control at nearly 70MPH (110 km/h). He impacted the Scorpion TMA without applying any brakes. Not only that the driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and was able to walk out of his vehicle after the crash without assistance. He suffered two minor neck injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. The attenuator driver also walked away unharmed. Pictured is Peter Hammarström of Berlex. Ever wondered how our Big Sandy attenuator works? Those bright yellow barrels are filled with varying amounts of sand to meet a specific weight. Each barrel size is designed to hold a specific amount of sand, ranging all the way from 200 to 2100 pounds. Big Sandys are placed in an array, depending on the posted road speed. When impacted, the Big Sandy array slows the vehicle by attenuating the energy with frangible plastic and sand, protecting the driver from the concrete barrier or post.

Insane crash! Watch Box Truck in Australia flip and impact Scorpion TMA. On one rainy December day back in 2016, a semi-truck with tandem trailers skidded along the wet road and impacted one of our Scorpion TMAs. The Scorpion easily stopped the full impact of the second trailer unit, keeping it from catapulting into the work zone and injuring any road side workers. This is a great testimony to the strength and reliability of our Scorpion TMAs. Notice the low level of damage to the Scorpion unit itself because of the modular design that crushes in progressive stages, our Scorpions can often be easily repaired and fitted with new replacement parts, keeping your repair costs and time in the shop significantly lower than other TMAs.

Flashback Friday to nearly a year ago in November 2019. Jeff Dorty, with Illinois DOT, was in the drivers seat of a yellow dump truck fitted with a Scorpion Towable Attenuator when a van rear ended him. According to Jeff, the red van was trying to pass a semi-truck and was distracted enough to slam into the TA at an estimated 70+ MPH without any braking. Because of the Scorpion's incredible energy absorbing capabilities, both Jeff and the driver of the impacting van were able to walk away without any serious injuries.
