MONO COUNTY MAY FACE INCREASED RESTRICTIONS AS COVID-19 CASES RISE Over the last two weeks, Mono County has experienced an increase in COVID-19 cases significant enough to threaten our current Tier 3 Moderate (orange) status within the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy (Blueprint). The Blueprint governs our local economic and social activity based upon the degree of virus transmission within the county. Most of the new cases are associated with the U.S. Marine Corps Mo...untain Warfare Training Center (MCMWTC) in northern Mono County (Pickel Meadows), with over 60 cases reported to the county by the Marine base since the outbreak was identified on October 21. The Marine Corps has independent healthcare and public health capacity and maintains overall responsibility for the outbreak response. Currently, there is no evidence that the outbreak at the MCMWTC has contributed to increased community transmission outside of the Marine Corps community in Mono County, despite some increase in unassociated cases. Join representatives from the Mono County Health Department, Mammoth Hospital, and Unified Command in a bilingual community conversation at 5:30pm this Thursday, November 5. With containment on the #CreekFire at 70% and minimal fire behavior over much of the 377,693-acre fire, the name of the game at this point is suppression repair.... Almost 600 miles of fireline were constructed during suppression efforts over the course of the last two months to stop fire spread and protect homes, communities, archeological sites, recreation sites and other values threatened by the fire. More than half of that fireline was put in with bulldozers by clearing vegetation down to dirt and mineral soil. There were more than 150 miles of road that was improved to be used as fireline and more than 100 miles of handline was dug by firefighters. Fire managers try to repair firelines as near as possible to their original state. They do this by using heavy equipment to pull vegetation that was removed back ono the cleared line to make it look as natural as possible. Chippers are used to chip up trees and brush that were removed and that material is put on lines to divert water and provide stability. They also construct water bars to divert rain and runoff to prevent erosion. Other reasons for suppression repair are to reduce impact to the habitat of threatened or endangered species; prevent further destruction to archeological sites; and discourage use of firelines as ATV and UTV trails, which can exacerbate damage. Here are the suppression repair numbers as of Monday: 597 total miles of fireline 341 miles of dozer line 152 miles of road improved as fireline 104 miles of handline 366 total miles of repair completed 213 miles of completed dozer line 92 miles of completed road improved as fireline 61 miles of completed handline Photos A crew chips trees and brush along Kaiser Pass Road just past Mono Springs Road on October 24, 2020. CREEK FIRE DAILY UPDATE: NOVEMBER 3 Acres: 378,201 Containment: 70% Expected Full Containment: 11/15/2020... Acreage Update: There was an approximately 2,500-acre decrease in acreage due to better mapping. Several large unburned islands in the interior of the fire that had been included in the burned acreage total were removed, resulting in a slight reduction in acreage. Public Meeting: A virtual public meeting will be held this Wednesday, November 4 at 7:00pm The meeting will air live on the Sierra National Forest Facebook page (www.facebook.com/SierraNF) and the Creek Fire YouTube channel (https://bit.ly/2HhOSh8). Current Situation: The majority of active fire behavior remains in the northeast corner of the fire. Fire managers have identified three distinct areas of heat in that area in the Cold Creek drainage just north of Thomas A. Edison Lake; near Pincushion Creek to the north; and in the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River. Due to the steep, rugged terrain in those areas, it is too dangerous to take direct action and the fire is being monitored by ground and air. Most of the fire is hemmed in by granite rock formations, which form a natural barrier to limit spread. Currently, the fire is hop-scotching from fuel source to fuel source in the rocky terrain. Weather: It remained warm and dry over the fire on Monday, a trend that will continue the next few days before a cold front blows into the area Thursday night, bringing a dramatic drop in temperatures, strong southwest winds and the possibility of rain or snow. High temperatures at the 7,000-foot level and above are forecast to drop into the 30s and 40s with sustained southwest winds of 35 mph and gusts up to 55 mph. Smoke Outlook: Mammoth Lakes and Bishop should see moderate to USG air quality, and Yosemite NP area forecast to remain mostly good to moderate today. Southwest ridge winds arrive tomorrow which should increase AQ values in communities east and northeast of the Creek fire. CREEK FIRE DAILY UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2 Acres: 380,663 Containment: 70% Expected Full Containment: 11/15/2020... Current Situation: There was very little growth on the fire Sunday, with the majority of active fire isolated to the northeast corner around Vermillion Cliffs north of Lake Thomas A. Edison and the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River. Large expanses of exposed rocks and cliffs are serving as a natural barrier to confine fire spread in those areas. While there has been no significant movement, the fire is picking and choosing its way around where fuel is available. Weather: While warm, dry weather will persist through mid-week, periods of passing cloud cover associated with an upper-level low-pressure system across southern California will bring some relative humidity recovery, especially across higher elevations. The combination of the upper level low, some moisture and up-slope flow in the afternoon could even produce a few light sprinkles on Monday afternoon and evening. There is a significant weather pattern shift expected into the weekend, as a cold front approaches Friday, which will bring much colder temperatures, humidity recovery and even potential precipitation for higher elevations. Before the cool down, however, strong pre-frontal southwest winds Thursday night into Friday will impact the fire. Gusts up to 50 mph across ridges are possible, which could prove problematic for hazard trees and briefly increase fire behavior where the fire remains active. Smoke Outlook: Lee Vining, Mammoth Lakes, and Bishop should see good to moderate air, and Yosemite NP area forecast to remain mostly moderate today and tomorrow. Town of Mammoth Lakes 29.06.2020

CREEK FIRE DAILY UPDATE: NOVEMBER 1 Acres: 380,345 Containment: 70% Expected Full Containment: 11/15/2020... Current Situation: The northeast portion of the fire around Vermillion Cliffs north of Lake Thomas A. Edison and the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River continues to be the most active. The majority of activity is confined by large expanses of exposed rock and fire managers are monitoring the areas closely. The fire is not spreading actively but right now there’s still lots of potential for this fire to stand up and move around with winds coming, said fire behavior analyst Byron Kimball, alluding to winds forecast to accompany a cold front expected to move into the area late next week. Weather: Unseasonably warm, dry conditions will persist over the fire the next four to five days. A cold front forecast to move into the area late next week will be preceded by gusty southwest winds. While maximum temperatures are expected to drop into the 40s and 50s, the winds could be problematic given the extremely dry conditions. Smoke Outlook: Breezy early morning easterly winds across ridges will transition to up-drainage into the afternoon with some humidity recovery. Despite air movement this morning, expect similar air quality conditions as yesterday as similar terrain-driven diurnal wind patterns to continue this afternoon.
