Join us for the beautiful celebration of El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). "El Dia de los Muertos is a time for remembering family, friends and ancestors who have passed on. It is a lovely tradition that begins with the belief that people die three deaths. The first death is when our bodies cease to function; when our hearts no longer beat, when our gaze no longer has depth or weight, when the space we occupy slowly loses its meaning. The second death comes when... our body is lowered into the ground, returned to mother earth, out of sight. The third death, the most definitive death, is when there is no one left alive to remember us. The legacy of past civilizations is graphically manifested on this occasion through people’s beliefs that death is a transition from one life to another in different levels where communication exists between the living and the dead. Indigenous people believe that souls did not die, that they continued living in a special place to rest. In this place, the spirits rest until the day they could return to their homes to visit their relatives. On November 2nd the souls are remembered and honored with a variety of rituals such as building beautifully decorated altars adorned with sugar skulls, marigolds, candles, ofrendas of fruits and vegetables, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. This is a very special ritual, since it allows the living to once again share the joy and love of their departed loved ones, not in a solemn fashion but in a joyous and festive celebration of death and life. El Dia de los Muertos is a time of reflection about the meaning of life and the mission that one needs to fulfill. Death in many situations imparts a feeling of pain and loss. For others, death is transcendence, transformation and resurrection. During the celebration of El Dia de los Muertos all of those feelings and beliefs come together in a season that brings to life the memory of the loved ones." By Ana Davis
