REACHING OUT - DR. ALIVIA SILVA "Yolo County became my home after I immigrated to this country as a young child from Mexico. I went to Woodland High School, and then UC Davis to pursue medical school. Time has passed by so quickly with my son heading off to college later this year. My heart is still in this community where I work as a surgeon at Sutter Hospital. I know there are many newly diagnosed women with breast cancer who are Spanish speaking. They need real support ...to help them get through a difficult diagnosis with limited financial means. Some of my patients even share, "I can't afford transportation to my medical appointments." I am here to help them fill out the Granting Pink application for financial assistance. I am also honored to help Thriving Pink with their outreach programs and workshops to provide bilingual information about breast cancer detection, self-care, and treatment options. During this difficult year when many cancer patients are still going through medical treatment - and often going alone, we really appreciate the care and compassion of our healthcare professionals. YOUR STORY MATTERS At the infusion center, Thriving Pink board member and nurse, Chasity Baltazar, is the initial contact for dozens of newly diagnosed women each month. As a breast cancer survivor, I understand how challenging this journey can be. I try to make a connection with every one of these women, ages 21 to 81, to let them know that there is tremendous support out there. I provide them with Thriving Pink comfort bags, and information and resources to educational ...workshops and support groups. Many of them and their families face financial hardships, and I refer them to the Granting Pink program. I understand how hard it is to be vulnerable and to open yourself up to receive support. Thriving Pink is near and dear to my heart. I want to share my story and let others know that you don't have to go through this alone." Thriving Pink provides support to local breast cancer survivors with programs and services that are 100% funded by the generosity of our community. YOUR STORY MATTERS "I am so grateful for this memory from two years ago today. I just finished major surgery in my breast cancer journey, and have been spending many months since then healing myself - mind, body, and spirit. In spite of COVID, I am living a life of gratitude and peace like never before. My heart goes out to everyone going through treatment and fighting for their health right now without the presence of their loved ones. We truly can do hard things together.
