Sometimes even we need to be treated! I was having pain at the distal portion of my thumb after working on patients today. Dr. D was able to diagnose that the dysfunction wasn't actually coming from the site pain but from my thenar region. Specific soft tissue work doesn't always feel great, but is needed. Being specific with the diagnosis and it's pathology is key to being able to treat the condition quickly and effectively. Have pain with overhead squatting? We typically see in overhead movement patterns that there is a lack of thoracic mobility, shoulder range of motion & stability, and core strength. So how do you fix this? ... Take gravity out! Here is a modified position to place a patient in to mimic a squat. A lot of times we will see hyper extension of the last week back and flaring of the ribs. Holding intra-abdominal pressure while bringing the dowel overhead helps to learn stability of the core. Working to hold that pressure with lifting overhead will increase shoulder active range of motion.
