Separated Parents: Please read.
Grounding a kid for a month frequently makes things worse. As jailer, you both not only grow resentful, but with a sense of no parole, the kids figures out that... once in jail, it doesn't matter what else they do to annoy. More often than not though, the kid nibbles away at the parent and the month long grounding ends early actually leaving the kid feeling empowered for all they did wrong. In a way, they think they won. Not a very good way to address negative behavior to shape better behavior. In truth, rather than thinking about or escalating punishments, wonder about any disconnect between parent and child. Wonder about how facilitating the parent-child relationship may facilitate feeling good about each other. Kids who feel good about themselves and the connection with their parents tend to be better behaved and also tend to be more influenced by what a parent has to say. This doesn't mean not expressing disappointment or not having limits boundaries and expectations. This is about appreciating that the quality of the parent-child relationship is the platform for making all that work best.
Bias is everywhere. Recognizing your own is a great first step. Thank you, Mark Brian Baer.
We will be closed for Juneteenth.
