Our first graders were thrilled to experience science in action while looking for insects in our Garden Classroom with Kym. When students engage in hands-on lessons, they show an increase in positive attitudes towards content material and learning. #lovelearning #progressiveeducation

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. We're reminded of the responsibility we all have to ensure that we as a society remember and take action to prevent such tragedy. In 2019, TCS students partnered with The San Diego Jewish Academy in an educational and artistic project to memorialize the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust and honor the survivors. Each of these beautifully hand-painted butterflies was completed by our students and memorializes a life lost and symbolizes a voice gained.

The 7th and 8th Grade students at The Children's School had the honor and privilege to hear Amanda Gorman, America’s first youth poet laureate, speak to them pe...rsonally just hours before the 8th grade graduation in 2020. This morning they awaited anxiously and watched in awe as she spoke for the Presidential Inauguration, as if hearing from a friend. Amanda's word's of wisdom and strength have inspired our students for a second time with her message of unity, healing, grief and hope.

#Indigenouspeoplesday is a holiday celebrated on the second Monday of October in the US. Indigenous People's Day, at its core, aims to celebrate and honor the past, present, and futures of Native peoples throughout the United States while acknowledging the effects of colonialism on these communities. This day moves beyond the narrative of oppression and honors the histories, cultures, contributions, and resilience of Native Americans.

Join us in celebrating World Teachers' Day 2020. We appreciate our TCS teachers! "In this crisis, teachers have shown, as they have done so often, great leadership and innovation in ensuring that #LearningNeverStops, that no learner is left behind. Around the world, they have worked individually and collectively to find solutions and create new learning environments for their students to allow education to continue. Their role advising on school reopening plans and supporting students with the return to school is just as important. -JOINT STATEMENT FROM UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF AND EDUCATION INTERNATIONAL

Introducing instructional technology in the classroom at a young age can help prepare students for future digital demands. Over the summer, TCS equipped each classroom with technology, such as smart TV's, that makes collaborating and connecting a possibility for both on-campus and distance learning students. Our eighth grade students used this tool to present their GeoMetro Cities designs.

Only a small portion of an iceberg can be seen above the surface. Similarly, understanding someone's identity is limited by what we see on the surface. The TCS staff underwent a training that explored the concept of bias and the importance of going "below the surface." We explored the differences between explicit and implicit bias and how to challenge it in our everyday lives and how to best educate our students. #progressiveeducation #identity #challengeyourself #unpackassumptions

Kindergarten got a special visit from The Book Fairy today! The Book Fairy read "Dragon Was Terrible." In this tale, one kingdom is fed up with its disobedient dragon. This book’s most remarkable feat is its ability to gently and humorously suggest alternative, peaceable methods for dealing with negative emotions and destructive behavior while also reminding readers of the power of a good story. #progressiveeducation #tcslj #SEL #kindnessmatters #sandiego #lajolla

Giving children the freedom of playing outdoor helps them to feel happier and calmer. Being outside means that children naturally get vitamin D, which is proven to help improve moods and create a positive mental attitude. So let's get moving!
